Longer exposure is the trick, and framing the shot away from other light sources. The camera doesn't really matter, as long as you can manually adjust things (try pro mode on a phone), and have it mounted on something that won't shake during the exposure.
With that, aurora photos very often aren't as they would appear to the eye because of that long exposure. They can still get reasonably bright though.
Well, picked one lf the best, most were by the line of this:
and as far as phone cameras go I've got a preaty good one and had it set right. True, I didn't have any gear for stabilisation, and being somewhat intoxicated might not help my skills to shine (framing in fig. 1 should prove that point) but did it over objects, and such. Well, anyway my point is its much better watched than wasted on attempting to get a hundred pics of :)
Oh yes, they're definitely a spectacle to enjoy through your own eyes rather than a lens.
I'd say that's a pretty decent photo still, and that's much more accurate in how they actually look.
