I once read someone blaming directors/producers mixing movies with theaters or full-on perfectly-tuned surround setups in mind instead of the 2.0 TV speakers and earbuds most people actually use, and I don't know how true it actually is but it sure makes intuitive sense.

Then again, I still have to wear my ANC earbuds in the theater without them playing anything because the score and sound effects are so loud.

I have a perfectly tuned surround setup and they still sound shit. So many sound directors just suck at their jobs nowadays.

Quite true in my experience. A 5.1 or 7.1 surround system with a good center speaker will make most issues go away.
Even just 3 speakers in front of you with a center one that is usually for voice should fix it (like some soundbars).

If you have only two but still want something better than the default I can recommend: https://www.fxsound.com/ formerly known as DFX. It's now free.

How does FxSound work?
Home stereo systems and PC’s are built with a compromise: keep hardware affordable at the cost of quality.
FxSound compensates for low quality hardware by targeting and processing sound’s timbre, volume, spatial balance, and dynamics.
What this means for you is clearer, louder, deeper, and balanced audio. Install our lightweight program, let it run quietly in the background, and enjoy your new audio experience.
