Love this movie. The concept is fascinating, and it works neatly to really illustrate a "night on Earth."

And the Roberto Benigni interlude is still one of the funniest things I've ever seen on film.

I was lucky enough to see it in theatres at the time. Loved it also, and a few years later spotted Jarmusch selling Billy Bob Thornton "french-fried pertaters" from his little Frostee Cream shack in "Sling Blade."

One of these segments kinda depressed me, though. It was in a Nordic country I think, blanketed in snow.

If you like this, go watch "Coffee & Cigarettes"

  • the Wynona Rider skit fails. I see what Jarmusch is trying to do but it doesn't work.
  • the NYC one is OK, neither good nor bad, it has a couple good moments tho.
  • the Paris one starts out promising but it is also just OK, without the good moments.
  • the Rome one is FUCKING HILARIOUS. One of the funniest things I've ever seen. Benigni is perfect in this. The timing is spot on. It really saves the whole movie.
  • The Helsinki one is very, very good. It really makes you think about what's important in life, and even tho it's depressing it's also kind of hopeful in a weird way.

So if anyone starts watching and it doesn't seem that good, be aware that the last half is far better than the first. (And I don't think you miss anything by skipping ahead).

Agreed on the Wynona Rider story. I saw this when it was new and had the same reaction, @Sergio@piefed.social. I'll have to watch this again for tge rest.

But thanks for the share, @gsus4@mander.xyz !
