No, the dowry is the price the woman's parents pay.

Women were seen as a burden. So in order to make women more appealing to marry, the woman's parents had to give a dowry.

You're thinking of a bride price, which is the opposite.

I think that's oversimplifying it. On the Wikipedia article there is a discussion of dowry as a type of inheritance for women, even proposing that
