Must be nice to be so rich you can just decide to leave.

[–] Anahkiasen@lemmy.blahaj.zone 90 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Exactly, in the article he sees the problem but instead of using his money to help he fucks off to be safe. He may not be an asshole but he's a a bit cowardish for it I feel even if he can still help from NZ it's more likely he will just focus on his life there than try to put out the gordian garbage fire that is the US

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 17 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Why does a canadian have an obligation to help the US?

[–] hissingmeerkat@sh.itjust.works 19 points 2 days ago (2 children)

He owns more wealth, property, and control of businesses in the US than well over 99% of Americans.

[–] Taldan@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The most effective thing he can do it take that tax revenue out of the US. Now New Zealand and Canada will be reaping all the benefits of having him there

[–] LostGhost@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago

You think he pays taxes at the same rate as the rest of us losers?

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk -4 points 2 days ago

Americans made their choice

[–] comfy@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

Which countries do you think the mess will overflow into first? (Not to mention the ongoing global effects of the US dumpster fire)

Nationalism isn't a useful way to see the situation. It's everyone's problem, and those who have the wealth and influence to help are especially obliged to solve this.

[–] architect@thelemmy.club 0 points 1 day ago

Great argument! “Why should people that immigrate give a shit about any other country than their mother country?” Really good thinking there arguing for isolationism.

[–] MikeTheMaker006@reddthat.com 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh no, its well documented that he's a raging asshole. Fuck James Cameron.

[–] Anahkiasen@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 day ago

Sorry sometimes I forget this isn't Reddit and I don't have to take pincers to criticize billionaires

[–] aim_at_me@lemmy.nz 8 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Yeah. And as a kiwi it kinda pisses me off that we let wealthy Americans in. I'd rather it was a generic visa program than a pay-to-play.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I mean, you can just put boulders over the bunker doors when they try hiding.

[–] architect@thelemmy.club 1 points 1 day ago

They going to fuck you next. Maybe you’ll get s taste of your allies saying you deserved it too. Great time on this planet.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 1 points 1 day ago

100% I hear you! Whatever happened to Helen Clark btw?

[–] ronl2k@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Cameron will be forgotten once he leaves the Hollywood media bubble. He's never been politically influential, and his short intervals of fame relied solely on 2 movies. But his fame from Titanic and Avatar has mostly died out.

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago

He could always make an anti-Trump film, and have the EU fund it.

[–] harsh3466@lemmy.ml 9 points 2 days ago

He's an asshole

[–] Taldan@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Canada has a working holiday visa with the US

It's an open work visa for 1 year, and it renewable. Cost a few hundred between passport, paperwork, and other fees when I did it

It's available to all Americans without a criminal history, if they are below the age of 30 or 35 (I forget the exact requirements for each cut off)

You don't have to be rich. I was working as a line cook when I saved up enough to move

[–] Juice@midwest.social 35 points 2 days ago (1 children)

"Must be nice" is the comment I came here to post.

I don't see him sticking his neck out either. I've heard about him crashing out that people dont like his blue space horse movies enough. Who has he tried to educate, or influence?

Good riddance, our culture is trash, you helped no one

[–] harsh3466@lemmy.ml 10 points 2 days ago

I also came to post "must be nice".

Rich assholes

[–] skeezix@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I left with just a few k in my pocket. Being rich helps quite a bit, but it's not the only method.

[–] Cenotaph@mander.xyz 24 points 2 days ago

Often it's less the price of leaving and more about getting the new country to let you stay

[–] etherphon@midwest.social 17 points 2 days ago

All the assholes who are making the country worse could afford to do that easily, leaving the rest of us stuck here to clean up the shit, what else is new though.

[–] Hayduke@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yup. I mean, I get it, but I would not advertise it. If everyone jumped ship, those that simply couldn’t would drown within it, so he isn’t exactly helping the situation. Need every vote possible, and dollar for that matter.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I mean, remaining on a sinking ship doesn't save anyone else from drowning. Some people have a life raft, I can't blame them for using it. I would get out if I could, cause things don't seem to be getting better anytime soon except on the off chance the midterms actually save us.

Ideally, the folks getting away on the life rafts wouldn't be determined by how much money they have. Maybe send the most vulnerable first, and the people with the means to resist stay behind. But that's not how this situation works, unfortunately.

It's a crabs-in-a-bucket situation. Why pull down the ones who can escape?

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Honestly, if I was relatively wealthy, odds are that I would tuck tail and run away from the US. Unfortunately, my poverty has backed me into a corner. Flight isn't an option, only fight.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 2 points 23 hours ago

Yerp, the wealthy are always insulated from the problems they create. And then they get upset when we try to tax them to contribute to fixing those problems.

"It doesn't affect me, why should I pay for it?" "Motherfucker, you caused it!"

[–] ronl2k@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I mean, remaining on a sinking ship doesn’t save anyone else from drowning.

If you think America is a sinking ship, what does that indicate about the continued safety of NZ?

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Huh? New Zealand is in much better shape than america.

[–] architect@thelemmy.club 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You let the fucking same wolves in!

Jesus Christ people can’t be serious right now,

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 day ago

Why are you assuming I'm from New Zealand? All I know is they don't have federal agents going around executing people extrajudicially in the streets...
