no duh you'll catch up against someone who doesn't plan for a future at all, the fact that america was 75 years ahead feels like an accident now

200 years of accumulation, not being destroyed by wars which regularily hindered development of every potential competitor, 70+ years of global hegemony and wealth extraction.

Seems really smart to structure government in a way that makes it basically structurally impossible to plan further than a couple years ahead.

Then you have the private sector which is mostly structured in a way that disincentises to acting in a way that pays off more than 3-12 months from now.

The capitalists really are the only ones who get to impose long term plans.
