Can't believe it's been renamed for a year now!

It hasn't.

This feels like it might devolve into a discussion about where the legitimate authority to name things derives from. brb popcorn.

it derives from me. fuck all y'all and i ain't decided to change it. my ego is bigger you can tell because i ain't slathered in orange clown grease.

[–] ExtremeDullard@piefed.social 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Not really. It's just that only a lunatic fringe in the US calls it the Gulf of America. They can also call the country the Uber Stupendous Amazingistan, if nobody else ro-ro with that, it's as good as nonexistent.

Point being, while there is no legitimate authority, usage is what makes it official.

About 30 years ago, a local company paid for the naming rights of the county arena and event center. The amount was so absurdly low that I found it insulting. I decided that it didn't pay me to call it that, but I'm open to offers. In any case, everybody knows what I mean when I say "Coliseum and Expo Center."

So for years now, I've been thinking that we need to create a web site or app that we can use to reach consensus on what places should be called. None of this corporate name claptrap. If we the citizens pay for a pro sports stadium with our taxes, then we can call it what want! If enough people decide on a place's name, that's common usage, and that simply becomes what it's called.

Given how many places here in Europe have had several names throughout history depending on who occupied the territory at the time, and that country usually still calling that place that today regardless of what it's officially called today by its current occupier, the answer is that everyone can do whatever they want. Language differences mean you often have to translate the name anyway.

Like, Mexico City is about as wrong as Gulf of America from a Mexican perspective, it's not exactly labelled Ciudad de Mexico is it.

I mean there's a merit to translating names that still keep the original meaning, as with Mexico City/Ciudad de Mexico.

The better question is why is it not called Tenochtitlan.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Yeah, also it just fucks harder to say Tenochtitlan is the largest city in North America. Mexico City sounds so new despite it just being the continuation of the Aztec city. But it's nobody's business but the Mexicans
