I never understood why in the US (North America? Europe?) children do this experiment with potatoes. Use a citric fruit instead, much better at moving ions around.

I think its because potatoes rot a lot slower giving the kid time to enjoy the clock.

Oranges seem a good alternative. Oranges and Tomatoes used to be extremely abundant in the U.S. not sure I want to check their prices now

Probably because potatoes are less messy than citrus fruits. No teacher wants to deal with an even stickier classroom.
