It's not about that so much as the temperature. I work outside a lot, so I let it grow out during the winter. Right now it is the only thing holding a blizzard back from our city. If I trim it we'll be buried in two feet of snow and then I will have to go out in that bare cheeked. So I keep it long until the spring.
