Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

Not a soulslike, but my fiancée and I have picked up Resident Evil Village and are having fun with that. Well, at least she is, watching me. :D Got a PS5 copy that's been acting up for some reason: constant crashing of the game make it near unplayable. Like 10-15 crashes per play session unplayable. Downloaded the game on PC and rushed up until where we got on PS5 - might play some later. Other than that, Slay the Spire 2 has me in its iron grip.

You could completely change the lore of any game if you come up with a super absurd "what if". But thinking of scenarios that would make sense in the lore of their respective game, what would you think of?

What if the ancient Pthumerian catacombs and the Old Blood were never discovered? Would it still have found their way to Yharnam by means of cosmic intervention?

What if P understood the King of Puppet and his message to P and acted accordingly? Leaving this somewhat vague since I know some of you are playing the game right now, and I don't know if you've followed all the bits of lore there are.

What if Sekiro had teamed up with Genichiro to fight against the common enemy, possibly succumbing to the corrupting powers of the Divine Heir's bloodline?

It'll be more Rise of the Ronin for me, about halfway through it by now I think. Taking my time with it and completing the map rather than just doing the main story. The game is pretty huge, I can easily see this be a 100+ hour playthrough. I am now regretting pirating it instead ofbuying it at the last sale as I wouldn't mind logging these hours into my Steam account. Will definitely buy it next time it's for sale at around €23.

Don't have too many new things to say about it this week. Game is enjoyable. I am probably more high on it than normal as it's been over a year since my last big open world style game, but even then I am enjoying the other parts of the game as well. Combat is super fun, I am finally starting to get some flow into really utilising more of the kit in combat and you really have a lot of tools at your disposal if you want them. The story is also actually intriguing and I think several of the characters are pretty charming - Ryoma in particular is becoming someone I'm really growing fond of.

Honestly, don't feel bad about it. Considering the amount of bad games coming out these past years, you'll get burned by them so often if you don't try them out for free first. I've learned my lesson and pirate pretty much exclusively if I have the chance because I simply don't have the money to play these games otherwise.

Compared to other open-world titles, how do you like it? You seem to have taken a liking to it judging by your comments over the past few weeks, but I can't tell by the trailers if it's something I'd enjoy since I've grown increasingly tired of open-world games over the past few years.

I mean, the open world is not any better or any worse than your garden variety Ubisoft style. You clear camps, you collect stuff (cats in this instance), you fight minibosses, you find chests with loot. I have it as pretty much equal to something like Ghost of Tsushima or the Witcher 3 (minus Gwent - the best part of that game). The loot is pretty decent - there is maybe too much trash loot, but there is still enough actually usable loot that it feels rewarding (unlike something like Witcher 3). The random events that pop up are pretty repetitive, but most of them involve combat so I don't mind because the combat is great. I will say that there is some progression stuff tied to engaging with the open world (skill points from visiting shrines, learning stances from minibosses, more skill points from completing areas etc) so you can't completely stick to the main story only I think if you really hate open world stuff (which is fair - I can only play these games in moderation and will probably wait a while until my next one).

The benefit here to me so far is that the combat is fun enough that I am kept interested regardless. There is a lot more depth and potential to optimise, style and flex on your enemies compared to say Ghost of Tsushima, and there are also a lot more weapons which lets you have more variety if you want to. Honestly instead of trailers you should watch something like this video to see what is possible in this combat system. When everything clicks and you start to utilise your whole arsenal it is super fun and satisfying.
