From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

Hey all,
I want to get away from Android, at the moment my solution is a flip phone. it runs an old version of Android GO, but the lack of practicality drives me away from using it frequently.
are there any good phone/distro combos with working VoLTE? anything to avoid? any advice or recs would be great.
Thanks!

Why is VoLTE important for you?

If you are worried about privacy, you should not use normal phone services.

Some countries (Australia) now entirely block phones which don't support VoLTE from the network.

Uncertainty about whether I'd be able to connect is one of the main reasons I haven't bought a Linux phone yet as well.

Can confirm this shit sucks, I bought a OnePlus 6 a few months before the 3G shutdown and my phone's on the banlist for most providers now despite technically being supported, so no calls.

If you know the IMEI of any phone you want, there are sites that let you check if it's blacklisted on their network, I can at least tell you the OP 6 is gonna be touch and go if you do commit.

I know many grandparents that made the effort to stay in touch with Children and Grandchildren.

They are not incapable of learning, they just need sufficient motivation and support.

Something like signal is simpler and less likely to push slop their way.

Also look at some of the simplified launchers available for android. It allows you to setup a locked down UI for them that hides everything they don't need.

EDIT: I used BIG launcher in the past with my 84 year old grandfather to great success.

> I know many grandparents that made the effort to stay in touch with Children and Grandchildren well, I'm not selfish, so I'm not going to bully my grandparents into jumping through hoops to talk to me. They're busy and stressed enough as it is, the last thing in the world i want to do is add one more thing to their plate.

Its not about forcing anyone.

Its about empowering them with a more complex communication medium that allow them to send and receive photos videos and voice notes. Not just with you, but with other people as well.

The process can be quite empowering for them. I would say discuss the option with them and let them decide.
