I wonder how this is going to work with ticket inspectors... https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-03-14/ticketless-travel-trial-set-to-start-in-victoria/106451108 are they going to ask you to log into your online banking to show the transaction? Because fuck that.
Mobile tickets just create a virtual Myki, so it's identical.
Contactless payments (e.g. credit and bank cards) should work the same way as TfL (and much of the rest of the world). The payment card card has no ability to store trip information, so instead the ticket system records your tap on/off events. At some predetermined frequency (usually overnight), it will then calculate the appropriate fares to charge.
Probably due to practicality reasons, the portable ticket inspection devices usually don't have live access to the data. Instead, they just record that your card was inspected, and if the overnight processing determines you didn't touch on, it flags you for fare evasion and bills the card the fine.

there is already phone tap payment on android systems, just not on apple
you can still use a ticket if you wish ( I do and I don't register the ticket either , I do pay by card but if I wanted to be completely anon I could pay by cash )
I think they have the ability to check using their own system if your payment method has an active fare against it. The system has to hold the info open so you can tap off again to finalise the actual amount you are paying.
