MODERATORS

We urge Paramount to listen to the voices of millions of fans who are yearning for more adventures in the Starfleet Academy. Renewing the show for a third season is not just a business decision; it's about continuing a legacy, honouring storytelling, and nurturing a global community of Trekkers.

I don't know, Im not a fan of the Kurtzman-era Trek. I'd prefer it if they'd create a series that's closer in tone to the earlier stuff.

While that may be your view, I hope you’re not going to work against the show or shows like it either.

Because very many people who between 40 and 55 did brigade against this show, gave it very negative reviews, and discouraged others from watching it without watching a full episode themselves. To the point that Psychology Today wrote a feature article The Trouble With Review Bombing.

Anyone over 35 is not in the key demographic. I dare say that’s most 90s Star Trek fans and most of us on this board.

But if we go out of our way to say that if it’s not made for us we’ll attack it relentlessly so that younger, target viewers won’t even try it, then it’s not going to serve anyone.

And yes, I have seen the entire season of SFA. I watched it with my partner and one of our GenZ kids. And I have signed the petition.

[–] scarabic@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

They just said they didn’t like it. Chill.

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world -3 points 1 day ago

It's not Trek. The negative reviews are deserved.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca -3 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Ok, so we're all wrong.

They cancelled the show because no one watched it, despite free episodes.

[–] StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website 15 points 2 days ago (3 children)

They put the show on a small niche streamer that doesn’t have an audience in the demographic that the show was made for.

The show did much better on Amazon channels than on Paramount+ — ranking 1 or 2 across its run. That tells you that the problem is that Paramount+ has narrowed its audience to Sheridanverse fans, not that the show isn’t good.

Every show Paramount+ has tried to attract the younger GenZ audience with has failed. And the streamer is failing — which is why Paramount has been bought and the streamer will be merged with HBO Max.

That my take as well. I’ve only seen one ep and I liked it. I just haven’t found the time to get access to it bc I won’t subscribe to bullshit services.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca -2 points 1 day ago

oh, I'm sure the infantile writing and shallow characters had nothing to do with it.

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world -2 points 1 day ago

I highly doubt any of this. A good series can attract people to a platform.

Problem is, nothing NuTrek has comes even close to be something platform-attracting. That says more about the quality than the platform itself.

don't bother, paisley cat and haverholm are in all these threads calling anyone who didn't like it haters

[–] haverholm@kbin.earth 3 points 2 days ago

It's not that you're "all" wrong, it's that you insist nobody else is right to like something you decided you didn't without watching it.

There were people who followed the show and liked it. The number of signers to the petition vastly outnumber the downvotes to my posts sharing it here. You can deal with that gracefully, or continue as you started 🤷

[–] MadMadBunny@lemmy.ca -4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (4 children)

That is your opinion.

I’m a huge fan of Kurtzman and all the New Trek that he created. I love them all. I often rewatch Discovery, Picard, even Academy. I need it. I need this. The entire world is gone to shit, and his shows, his creations, are the only thing that sooth me right now.

These comments, like the one you just made, are exactly why Academy has been cancelled, why Discovery was cut short, and so forth.

I truly dislike Star Wars. And yet, you’ll never see me bitching about it in their forums. I don’t think about it at all until something about it shows up, and even then, I just ignore it and move along, like any normal person would do.

If you don’t like it, if it’s not for you, then just don’t watch it, but shut the fuck up!!!! Let those who enjoy it, enjoy it.

Yes, "you’re entitled to your opinion etc.", but do you absolutely have to ruin it for everyone else?!? You’re part of the problem here.

You, and all others with their continuous vile comments, bear part of the responsibility in the cancellation of a beloved, respected show.

[–] blunderworld@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago

Damn, I never said you shouldn't like the show, or that it's objectively bad. I just expressed my preference for the direction of future trek projects, in what I thought was a relevant thread.

You know it's okay to enjoy something without making it your entire personality right? Leave your unfounded generalisations in the trash where they belong.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 day ago

o you absolutely have to ruin it for everyone else?!? You’re part of the problem here.

So we're supposed to watch bad TV for some kind of social conscience and responsibility? and if we don't watch what we like, we are "The Problem".

I'm getting an insight into modern Star Trek fans here.

[–] scarabic@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That is your opinion. Your argument that only your opinion may be spoken is invalid.

[–] MadMadBunny@lemmy.ca -1 points 2 days ago (2 children)
[–] Tmiwi@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

you literally did lol

[–] scarabic@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Yes it is. You told anyone who doesn’t like it to shut the fuck up.

If you don’t like it, if it’s not for you, then just don’t watch it, but _shut the fuck up!!!!_

Now let me get some🍿 and watch you dance about trying to argue that you didn’t say this.

[–] firelight@startrek.website 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's fine if people voice their opinions whether in agreement or disagreement.

From his perspective, you're part of the problem because you're advocating for resources to be spent on what you prefer over what he prefers.

[–] MadMadBunny@lemmy.ca 0 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (3 children)

So, what you’re telling me is, we should just take it like a good docile doggy and let all the new trek and its show runner be bullied into oblivion by trolls, incels and haters?

Because that’s exactly what you’re saying by taking their defence.

[–] Tmiwi@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

your characterisation of people who didn't like it as "trolls, incels, and haters" is insulting, needlessly defensive, and does nothing to garner support for your argument.

[–] scarabic@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

No, we’re telling you to maybe not jump down the throat of anyone who says “I dunno, I didn’t like it” like they are actively trying to kill your puppy. This post is taking up space in everyone’s feed, calling them to go sign. There is absolutely nothing wrong with someone saying “eh, nah.”

[–] firelight@startrek.website 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I'm saying you need to touch grass and let people voice their own opinion of a TV show.

This "shut up or agree with me" mentality is nuts.
