So in writing there's a bit of advice I've seen thrown around where you ask yourself, "is this the most exciting part of my character's life?" And if the answer is "no", you make your story about the most exciting part instead.
I feel far less enthusiastic about this as I would be about another Mad Max with a different character, or even a total spinoff film in that universe, because we fukken know the most exciting part of Furiosa's life already. Who cares about dumb bullshit like how she lost her arm, or why she started shaving her head? The answer to both of those question is "because they wanted to convey to the viewer visually that she's a badass desert warrior woman".
The decision to go ahead with this movie smacks of Hollywood conservatism - we can't do anything new, so let's just riff on things we know people already like.
