I like most of you Americans, but I don't wanna share the longest undefended border anymore if that asshole is elected again.

Just tell everyone that Alberta is out of oil. No one is going to invade for the maple syrup, despite it being the nectar of the gods.

It will be for the water though.

[-] girlfreddy@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 year ago

Yup. NAFTA negotiations are coming up shortly and I bet some of our unused pipelines will be looked at to transport fresh water instead of oil.

[-] frezik@midwest.social 3 points 1 year ago

Which might be a good idea. We've got the pipes sitting there already, connecting the whole continent. Might as well use them.

Before someone says it, yes, you can clean out oil pipelines enough to be used for fresh drinking water. It has been done before.

I dunno that it's a good idea. What would the US be willing to pay for that water? I mean if it's like the pittance water bottlers have been paying, fuck that.

Would we have restrictions on usage, and limits on how much they can take per year? Like there's a large chunk of desert that's growing crops and takes a LOT of water.

Lots of questions to be answered and logistics to look at first.

I don't think it works that way

[-] girlfreddy@sh.itjust.works -1 points 1 year ago

Why not? It's a free trade agreement and Canada has known for a long time that America would be looking at our freshwater sources because of their mismanagement.

[-] afraid_of_zombies@lemmy.world -1 points 1 year ago

I don't think you can just look at some old oil pipeline and just decide to run freshwater through it. Pretty sure water isn't the same as oil also I don't think most people want to drink oily water.

[-] frezik@midwest.social 2 points 1 year ago

Old oil pipes have been cleaned out before and reused for drinking water.

[-] girlfreddy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

I never said it was old. I said it was unused.

Google TMX pipeline.

[-] afraid_of_zombies@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Fine whatever you convinced me. The TMX pipeline is going to take water

[-] girlfreddy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I didn't say it would for sure. I said it would be discussed.

C'mon. This is a discussion, right?

[-] afraid_of_zombies@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Sorry it is just, I can't even with this. Canada is not going to get invaded. There are so many bigger problems to worry about.

[-] afraid_of_zombies@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

It can't possibly be as expensive to invade a country vs running a desalinization system

[-] girlfreddy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago

No invading Canada, k? That's not nice.

[-] afraid_of_zombies@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Hey I am on your side here. There are much easier ways to get tiny bacon and maple syrup

[-] GreyEyedGhost@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 year ago

It is if you have a standing army with no other wars to fight.
