It's practically the same reason reddit and other online communities were so much better a decade ago - idiots simply couldn't find their way to them / it was "icky nerd shit".

If you want people on your level, the trick is to focus on more esoteric communities within the platforms. r/okbuddyphd has been a recent favourite haunt of mine over there. I still visit the front page, but I go in with an "ambassador" sort of mindset and fully expect to get shit thrown at me.
