I would heavily recommend linking to join-lemmy.org instead of lemmy.ml.
I know, it's better for decentralization to link to the directory. The Black Company tried but they were overrun by Italy. LEMMY.ML
is the "shortest" Lemmy link and we cannot fit anything more unless the canvas expands or the very loose Fuck Spez Coalition lends us more space.
I'd maybe just say "Lemmy is a better Reddit" in that case.
Person: Searches "Lemmy"
Le Google: Lemmy Kilmister Mötorhead
or *goes to Lemmy.org* (which is what many are still trying to build)
...that domain is for sale for €6666 lol
1234 people have already viewed this offer
sounds legit
If your goal is to advertise the fediverse You should have used 'kbin'.
People can go directly to "lemmy.ml" but the site might disappear due to Mali re-establishing ownership of .ml domains, also its run by a tankie which will upset some people.
"Lemmy" provides 10 google sponsored results and then 'join-lemmy', the join-lemmy website has you 'join a server' and then presents you lots of options.
During the first Mastodon surge one of their issues is people felt overwhelmed by the options and it hurt Mastodon adoption, so a single website does make a lot of sense. Personally I would suggest lemmy.world its a general instance and the admins aren't linked to any extremist views, but you said that would be too long.
If you put 'kbin' into search the top result is kbin.social, that makes it seems like a reddit alternate. It keeps user choice limited and brings them into the fediverse. That means people aren't confronted with the complexity of the fediverse immediately and can learn and understand it at their own pace.
So if your goal is to advertise the fediverse I would push kbin, if your goal is to specifically get people to use a Lemmy based website I don't think you have a good option
The only thing with kbin is the lack of a mobile app. A lot of newer reddit users don’t even know there’s a website. It might be hard to convince those users to switch to kbin if it doesn’t have a mobile app.
I agree with this. There is at least five apps right now that are great for people coming from reddit, so Lemmy has that covered.
I personally don't care about Twitter like services and I think many Redditors don't either, so kbin has some additional noise for us.
Lemm.ee is pretty short
Please no I don't want my instance to get overrun by reddit users :(
I mean some are cool but if we overpopulate instances they begin having issues, have we not learnt from lemmy.world and lemmy.ml having tons of issues early July?
But we’ve also stress tested and evolved lemmy as a whole because of those instances’ troubleshooting
lemm.ee?
Yeah didn’t Mali re-asserting ownership of the .ml
TLD create a bunch of chaos literally within the last couple days?
There's an ongoing fiasco with the Mali government reclaiming all .ml websites. Fmhy lemmy is already gone as they used a .ml. You may want to link to the org instead, just in case
Is it related to the news of us military secrets being sent to ml emails?
Thats just typo shit. The real reason is the contract ended.
Yeah .ml domains were free but I'm sure that wouldn't last forever.
I know, it's better for decentralization to link to the directory. The Black Company tried but they were overrun by Italy. LEMMY.ML
is the "shortest" Lemmy link and we cannot fit anything more unless the canvas expands or the very loose Fuck Spez Coalition lends us more space.
Might I suggest lemm.ee? It's pretty short and doesn't have any issues with the Mali government.
If there can be a consensus between switching to lemm.ee or Kbin, I'd love to lend my pixel to either of those.
What org? Not lemmy.org. Join-lemmy.org is too big.
Of course it links to the domain that's probably about to die in short order. This is why open source can't have nice things.
Spend money on server and bandwidth? Yes.
Spend $9 on a reputable domain name rather than a domain name you technically “rent” from an unscrupulous registrar that eventually takes back domains and redirects them to adult websites? Thus leading to them getting sued by Facebook and bringing enough attention to Mail for them to take back the domains? Nah.
*.ml is not a good domain extension 😆

Noooo not .ml D:
That is awful; lemmy.world would be fine or join-lemmy.org or lemm.ee, but not lemmy.ml
LEMM.EE is actually fewest pixels
and the coolest instance, with the coolest people on it
thanks, it's true
As an Italian I’m sorry, Lemmy is more important than our flag

Cool ! Paging @donnachaidh@lemmy.world & @TruckBC@lemmy.ca & @randint@feddit.nl if they haven't seen this.
