Super worth on sale. The story is definitely weaker but the combat and movement is the best in the series.
Exactly how I'd put it. The story is meh at best -i barely remember it honestly - but the rest of the gameplay is great.
The worst of the series as a whole, but still a good game.
Personally, the word I'd use for it is 'boring'.
Loved ME and did a playthrough with the Legendary re-release, but when I hit Andromeda, I got to the planet and went 'You know, I don't care about ANY of these people, what we're doing, and I'm not going to drive around for 30 more hours of this' and just kinda... stopped playing.
Kind of the same for me. I really liked the prologue and the combat felt good, but I just felt bored by the world and characters. It felt like a bland open world game with the points of interest and collectables. And on top of that, the choice system didn't resonate with me.
I think the story got much better towards the end of the game. The last mission is as thrilling as any of the prior titles. The trouble is that it ends as it’s getting good, and major plot hooks are left forever hanging due to the cancelled DLC.
The setting wasn’t great - there seemed little point for setting it in another galaxy other than being able to ignore a lot of the prior games. This was not Stargate Atlantis. Stargate SG-1 only really had humans and Goa’uld since day one so Atlantis having only the two races in another galaxy fit into the established setting. Mass Effect had a lot of sentient races in the Milky Way, and Andromeda only having two made it feel lacking (especially with some plot revelations).
Gameplay was the highlight as others have touched on. They really managed to refine the combat to the best it has been.
Andromeda is fine as long as you don't compare it to the core Mass Effect trilogy. Ryder is no Shepard, and none of your squadmates are as memorable as Garrus, Tali, Mordin and the rest. But take the game as its own thing, and it's a pretty good time.
So it's missing all the things that made Mass Effect good
I'd say it's missing all the things that made mass effect great. But its still a fine game.
So it's missing all the things that made Mass Effect good
I'd say that's fair.
The graphics are pretty good and combat is enjoyable for about an hour, but the game is incredibly repetitive - drive around the planet, peril will be provided by cold/heat/gas, solve the exact same boring puzzles, fight one of two kinds of bad guy, go to a new planet and do it again, etc.
The story was almost in danger of being interesting at times, but the plot is cliched and predictable. I didn't like Andromeda and I loved ME1-3
I really liked it. The action is better than the trilogy and the story is decent enough. Maybe not quite up to the trilogy but still good to me.
The best description of it I’ve heard is “direct-to-video Mass Effect”. Which is to say: it’s got the elements you’re looking for in a Mass Effect title, but it fails to execute on those elements very well.
I played it on release, and enjoyed it for the most part.
It's not as good as the original games, with a weaker story, weaker characters and a wasted opportunity with the new galaxy, but it's still a decent game in its own right. The combat was great fun, and while the other stuff isn't up to the standard of the originals it's also not bad.
I remember some of the collectathon side quest tasks were a bit tedious, but I think they can be avoided.
I fucking loved it. Even the story. Hell, especially the story. Most of the bugs that are not fixed are annoying but minor and not related to the main story.
To nitpickers, I say again: most. It is by no means perfect but over the years at least for the main story it has become pretty well polished and playable.
You can also do almost all of the side quests as well, but bugs are pretty rampant in that category however, albeit most not in a gamebreaking way.
So, yeah, overall, as long as you get it on sale, I'd rate it j̸̡̛̻̣̞̭̼͉͉͚̣̤̭̦̺͈͈̙̩͍̥̺̟͊̂͗̈̉̈́͂̊̎́̿̍͛̈́́̓̌̿̎͆̊͒̀̇́͘͜ͅÐ̶̙͓̳̝͕̲̹͙͎̖͕̙̭̤͖̖̞̪͇̱̙͓̱͎̘̭̼̦̭̫̟̤͔͌͋̈̄̐̄̎̔̆̓͐̄̈̆͌͌̀̂̆͐̊̀̄͗̉́̉̕͘͜͠͠h̸̢͇͔͉̣͈̹͇͙̬͔̦̜͎̫̫̖̝̤̭̫͖̪͈̩͎̻̤̖̩̃̈͒͌̇͋̒̈́͋̄͐͋͋̾͂̃͛̏͂̀̍͆̓̚͝ͅͅ§̴̡̛̟̺̜͔͎͎͇̦̰͔̰͈̘̦̖̜̯͓̦̥̼͇̗̞͉̲̦̿̓̋̉̑̊͆̆͒̃͒̇̿̈́̂͒̓͛̓͊̾͂̊̈́̾̃̋̚̕͜͜ķ̸̛̭̺̫̮̯͔̳̫̣͖̱̥̙̥͉̜̣̠̗̪̳̹͓̪̹̿̐͋̐̔͒̿̀̌̐̀͋̾̈̿͌̌͊̃͗̊́͒̅̋͊̅͘͠͠ḩ̶̢̧̛͉͇̟͔̹͉̹̺̯̩̣͎̝͎̠̻̮̺̣̯̥̥̰͖̟͍̟͉̞̈͆̈́̈́̈́̂͊̌̈̋̋̔̀͐̓͐̃͂̽̀͒͌̿̌̌́̈́̚̚͘͜͝͝ͅ£̴̛͖͓̹͚̼͈͚̖͔͇̭̟̬͍͍̣̬̝̘̙̳̥̙̰̙̤͓͉̹̇̂̓̎̇̉̏̏̿̌͊͛͂͂́̋̍̀͌̇̂͊͌͘͘͜͜͜͝͝͝k̵̢̡̛̪͍̭͇̩͉͍̝͙͉̪̺̘̗̰̖̳̯̬͕̱͑̎͋̏̾͆̐̌́̑̆͛̏́̆̌͂̄̈́̑̾̎̍̇̔̽͘͘͜͜͝͝ͅ stars out of 10. I really loved it and it was the only one in the series I finished! Maybe its just because I found the environments beautiful and had some of the best HDR done in a game.
It’s also on Game Pass!
My brother played through it and didn't like the story nearly as much so I never bothered. I'm hoping the new entry is better!
Its better with mods to fix the worst of it. But even so I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone.
I just watched matrix 4, which gives me the same vibes as ME:A. Nice to revisit the universe but a lot of talk, busywork with no story and nothing new. The direct to video comment below seems apt.
Good setup, good engine, nicely rendered different worlds, not much going on. Like the matrix, could have been worthy in someone else’s hands.
However worth playing at budget price, just set expectations.
I loved it, the main story, crew quests, combat, customization were the highlights of the game for me.
Cutscenes are gorgeous and it's definitely worth it if you are a fan of the franchise.
I’m glad you made this thread. ME trilogy is my favorite game ever, but even though I’ve owned Andromeda for years I’ve never played it. Thinking I should try it out for my next game.
Yes. I paid full price for it and enjoyed the hell out of it. I did play it after the patch though so maybe had a better experience. Great/exciting combat and exploration is a blast. Main story is generic but fine. Had some interesting ideas that could of been cool if they expanded on them. $5 yea totally worth it.
Tbh it's not worth to taint your memory of ME with Andromeda. I tried to play it twice: once on release where I stopped because I couldn't care less for the story and a second time where o finished the game because I paid 60€ for it.
The combat it really nice, but that's it. The game has an open world shoehorned into it, even though ME doesn't need one. The characters are cringe because they try to invoce a familiarity that the characters in the original trilogy spend three games to build up. In the end I just found myself bored and simply wanted to finish the main quest. I devoured the original games and never wanted them to end.
