Is there any advantages to kbin over lemmy? php seems like a much worse tech stack for no benefit.
Kbin is nice. It’s easy to register on kbin.social so might as well check it out, although they are possibly under DDOS attack right now. I’m on there and lemmy at the moment.
Both systems are very similar and are compatible. You can follow lemmy from kbin and vice versa. Lemmy is probably more mature, but kbin is also pretty slick and seems to be moving fast. The community on kbin.social is fairly large so you will likely find more interaction on there without having to subscribe to federated servers. That probably makes onboarding a little easier for reddit refugees. They also have a microblog feature that works like Mastodon (federated twitter alternative) so you get to use lemmy-like and mastodon-like in one app and federate with both.
The fact that kbin is written in PHP shouldn’t put anybody off. Modern PHP isn’t the same as the old stuff that earned a bad reputation. I haven’t used PHP for a long time, but my understanding is it’s now a solid stack that’s on par with other mainstream stacks.
I think it might serve it's own niche. I heard the microblog tab makes it a bit nicer to see content from mastodon users that someone is following. so it could develop to be like a hybrid lemmy/mastodon type of tool. But I haven't read too much into what kbin is aiming to be
It looks like the Lemmy devs might have some IRL issues.

those are the admins of one instance. if you don't like them, you can join another or create your own
Wow that was fast. Glad I managed to read the guide and register for an account before that happened.
All the more reason to migrate...
Man what a shit show
This wild banning of subreddits that promote alternatives to reddit is likely to push a lot of people to leave who may have been on the fence about staying on reddit
I just deleted Reddit after seeing this post lol
Honestly, such a disappointment to see what has been a great community devolve because of such short sighted decisions..
If you haven't done it, go back and delete your posts and comments. Reddit needs your content, without its users providing content and moderation Reddit is done.
Redact can automate your content purge.
Windows, Mac and Linux clients available.
This will go away with the api changes right?
Yes. Don't wait around if you want to automate content removal.
Is there any way of downloading / exporting my comments? I know it sounds daft, but there's some of my early posts about personal stuff that I'd like to keep. I couldn't find anything in my account settings (first time I'd logged on to the actual website in a long time ha)
I did that :) Also fuck u/spez
I'm just waiting for the real Streisand effect to kick in if they ban /r/redditalternatives
That's already happening. People are mentioning kbin, lemmy, and tildes pretty regularly. A few others have tossed their sites in as well. It's going to get passed around one way or another.
Admin-level moderation is getting quite out of hand I see.
What can you even say except lol?

Jokes on them, I purged all my accounts.
Hello everyone, just saw this site and saw this post so created my account
welcome to kbin!
Hi. Same here.
Me too! It seems like a good place to transfer my unhealthy internet habits to.
Same. And unless something change, I'll delete my 9y old account.
Or you could just sell it to spammers!
But seriously, I feel like it’s just folks who have been on Reddit for ages that really care about this, those of us who likely switched to an app like Apollo after the Reddit redesign. I can’t handle the ‘new’ look and feel, nor can I handle the official app.
I suspect folks who began using Reddit apres the redesign don’t know/don’t care and will continue on.
I was browsing it while sitting in a drive thru. Got home and it was gone. Unbelievable.
does anyone know what information the guide contained? all I did when I signed up was click "Register" and create an account. is there anything I'm missing out on, or extra steps that I should take?
From what I remember, I don’t think there were any extra steps besides registering. The guide did go into detail explaining what kbin.social is for those looking for alternatives for reddit.
Yeah, I would love to know what was in that guide to maximize my experience here.
Yep. There's here, and there's ....now what the hell do I do?
So far what I've done apart from registering is subscribing to the large communities on Lemmy that I'm interested in, you can find them here https://lemmy.ml/communities/listing_type/All/page/1
For example you can subscribe these communities just by searching them on kbin like this @gaming@beehaw.org.
However it seems like the kbin feed is already doing a good job at showing popular lemmy communities.
@BreadDog Myself and @moar_salt created r/kbin and it hasn't been banned yet. Check it out and spread the word! I deleted my moderator account to it but can assist where needed.
Do you think this was maybe mishandled a smidge?
BOOO SPEZ GO BACK TO REDDIT unless you aren’t spez then stay hate
Definitely a joke account, but a pretty great one :)
Lolol my bad then
Has anyone been able to get mlem iOS app to connect to kbin yet? I just get a long timeout and then a generic error message.
Kbin doesn't have a Lemmy compatible API, though it's something the lead dev (and the Lemmy devs) have been discussing. But the instances can federate to each other beautifully.
For now your best bet would be using kbin as a PWA, which works great in my experience.
Info here: https://www.idownloadblog.com/2018/07/19/howto-progressive-web-apps-iphone-ipad/
How did I not know about this? I've been using a shortcut that opens the URL in my phone browser, which is way less elegant. Works fabulously, thanks!!
AFAIK, kbin uses a different url scheme so Mlem might not be set up to handle that. The alternative I’ve seen suggested is to use kbin’s progressive web app (PWA) and install it as a pseudo-app. It works well enough for now. I do hope more native can exist in the future.
Just joined kbin because of this. Still feeling my away around, but glad to be here.
glad to have you!
I joined here specifically because I saw that had been banned - they must see this as the threat. Anyone have any info about what was in the guide? I registered and subscribed to some things, but still getting my feet wet.
@Alue42 it was pretty much this...
