The results are in! 🎶

Hey everyone!

Thank you for participating, I gathered the votes submitted until this morning and put together this little graphics to announce the results, it looks like The Northern Boys were a clear favourite with their eccentric yet catchy song ; Azahriah and Bagarre, both ex-aequo, follow them closely in second position.

Congratulations to everyone for submitting great songs!

The ranking is based on the average position out of every vote, here are the details:

  1. The Northern Boys - Sexy Train (avg. rank : 3.4)
  2. Azahriah - Introvertált dal (4.2)
  3. Bagarre - On est les mêmes (4.2)
  4. Royel Otis - Heading for the Door (4.5)
  5. Tiki Taane - Tangaroa (4.6)
  6. Cassette Beasts - Your Inception (4.9)
  7. Pil - Dronning af månen - (5.0)
  8. Lu Kala - Hotter Now (5.2)
  9. Puggy - Lost Child (5.5)

The ranks are super close, I personally liked every single song and it was hard to have to rank them, because the last position didn't necessarily mean the song was bad.

But wait there's more! Here's a ranking based on how many time each song was ranked first :

  1. The Northern Boys - Sexy Train (21 times ranked first!)
  2. Tiki Taane - Tangaroa (13)
  3. Bagarre - On est les mêmes (10)
  4. Azahriah - Introvertált dal (8)
  5. Royel Otis - Heading for the Door (8)
  6. Lu Kala - Hotter Now (4)
  7. Pil - Dronning af månen (3)
  8. Cassette Beasts - Your Inception (2)
  9. Puggy - Lost Child (1)

That means every single song submitted was at least one person's favourite song, which is heartwarming, everyone got to discover new music!

There's even more! Here's a small list of every instance's most favourite songs (the songs that were most ranked highest for each instance), Belgium sadly didn't vote :

  • Australia (aussie.zone) : The Northern Boys & Tiki Taane
  • Canada (lemmy.ca) : The Northern Boys
  • Denmark (feddit.dk) : The Northern Boys
  • France (jlai.lu) : The Northern Boys, Royel Otis
  • Hungary (!hungary@lemmy.world) : Tiki Taane
  • New Zealand (lemmy.nz) : Pil
  • Programming.dev (programming.dev) : The Northern Boys
  • United Kingdom (feddit.uk) : Bagarre, Tiki Taane, Lu Kala
  • 3rd party voters : The Northern Boys, Bagarre, Royel Otis

Again, I want to reiterate how thankful I am that y'all participated. I didn't expect any response at all for such a niche event in such a niche social media, it was scary to be responsible that everything goes smoothly, but so rewarding to see people coming together and sending songs, and discovering new music from you!

What's next for Lemmyvision?

I'm going to keep the community open if you want to use it to share lesser known songs from where you're from, that you'd like people to discover, feel free to use !lemmyvision@jlai.lu as you wish, as long as it's in the spirit of this contest.

Obviously another edition will happen, and hopefully with more people, as Lemmy grows, and gathers more users, and I manage to make contact with more instances, there is an opportunity to discover even more music! If you'd like to help, feel free to send a message too!

However, I do like the idea of having smaller scale, thematic, events, or just prompts in between, like how the speedrunning event AGDQ has the SQDG in summer ; I'll think about something, but feel free to share ideas as well.

Thank you, and see you next year for Lemmyvision 2 !! 🎶

I also new from the moment it was posted that UK had won.

Well, when we saw the other entries our first thought was that we'd lost. Perhaps not nil points territory but...

Your post is the most upvoted one, don't tell me you didn't see that.

[-] Emperor@feddit.uk 2 points 8 months ago

I don't really pay attention to votes on posts.

Great result! It's been a long time since the UK won one of these - a clear message to our selection committee.

Thanks for running the competition - it was fun listening to the eclectic mix of music and I look forward to next years as there's been interest expressed from other instances, so it will be bigger and better next year. We'll need to up our game to stay in contention.

a clear message to our selection committee.

Here's the top comment from "Sexy Train" on YouTube:

In our own way, we've shown that this isn't as daft as it seems.

Last year was basically "we have Dua Lipa at home".

[-] Emperor@feddit.uk 2 points 8 months ago

I may be letting the side down but the latest Eurovision flew completely under my radar.

I'm banned from talking about it at home.
Because I'm salty that the judges seemingly handed Sweden the victory just in time for them to host on the 50th anniversary of ABBA winning.
It was won by Loreen (returning previous winner) dancing in a sandwich press.

I’m banned from talking about it at home.

Brilliant.

Because I’m salty that the judges seemingly handed Sweden the victory just in time for them to host on the 50th anniversary of ABBA winning.

I don't want to through petrol on an already contentious fire, but that does sound suspicious.

It was won by Loreen (returning previous winner) dancing in a sandwich press.

Well that can't be right... clicks link. Oh, OK.

Thanks for running this, it was super fun

In true Eurovision fashion, the weird song won 😂.

I'm just happy we beat Sweden (yes they didn't participate, I don't care).

The ranking is based on the average position out of every vote

Should there be some kind of point system from each community, like Eurovision also does? Also surely larger communities have a bigger influence with this kind of voting (even if they can't vote for their own song)? Dunno if it's the same without those douze points!

Thanks!

That's actually something I considered and was trying to calculate, but didn't allocate more time to implement it for the results (also I'm bad at maths) : I thought about counting every instance vote, but then as you said, more populated instance would have a bigger voice, so I thought about calculating votes for each instances as percentages, for example the UK instance had 15 voters, with 4 votes going for Bagarre - On est les mêmes which is 26.6% of their votes, then I thought maybe we could turn those % back into points, let's say 100, so the UK would give ~26 points to the song, but then there's the problem of instances with not a lot of voters, where one vote equals 100% so 100 points given from one instance. Another thing I thought about was maybe we could ask each instance to vote among themselves and send their respective results / ranking, and figure out if only the top song gets all their points, or some sort of average ranking like in this edition, this does lengthen the process and requires full attention from every instance, or a designated "diplomat" to make sure things go smoothly ...

So anyway that's a lot of words just to say that I'll try to figure out something to improve the results for the next Lemmyvision, not that the current ones are bad, but maybe it can be more fun than just a survey? 😀

If it were Eurovision, we'd need the mods to overrule the result and alter the winner to their liking or political agenda!

Having Sweden win last year, in the Eurovision, was in my opinion a steal, just to be able to have the event in Sweden this year, in order to celebrate the 50 years of ABBA, who broke through, in the Eurovision back then, and to promote the oppening of ABBA world.

I am so happy to have contributed to The Northern Boys winning. Kev deserves this.

Thanks for putting it together! Looking forward to next time

What a track Sexy Train is. Been practising the dance moves in it to bust out at the club this weekend.

Thank you so much for organizing! Indeed, I forgot to vote, life has been busy. Hopefully next time I'll get more Belgians interested

Looking forward the next edition!

[-] otter@lemmy.ca 4 points 7 months ago

I should have commented sooner, but thank you for organizing this :)

I really feel that your approach to this and your positivity/openness contributed to its success. I'm looking forward to next year!

An idea for next time: Would it be possible to tag users or notify them with updates in some way? It might help people (like me, sorry) stay on schedule with the contest. I didn't seem to catch these posts as they went by in my feed and really should have set up reminders in my calendar.

thanks again!

[-] inlandempire@jlai.lu 3 points 7 months ago

Thank you ! I'll think about it, maybe i can set up an opt in list of people to tag when I have news 🤗

[-] otter@lemmy.ca 1 points 7 months ago

That sounds good :))
