I thought it was interesting that the Canadian wildfires are emitting more carbon than all of the rest of its human activities combined.

Yeah, we're not a super populous country, but we have a ton of forest.

I've got people around me who say we in Canada don't need to do anything about CO2 emissions because, they claim, our forests absorb more than we emit. My response has always been "wait until they start burning."

A stupid question - why don't people in countries with large forested areas just dig really long and wide trenches with water which would take longer for the fire front to cross (due to winds and general heat it still would, I know)?

One would think this makes sense economically, long-term.
