You could make quite the impressive chain with that wand of lightning
I'm new to the game and this happened to me for the first time the other day.
I really panicked but then luckily I had a scroll that cleared them quite easily.
Sounds like it was either a scroll of retribution or a scroll of rage

At least that thief is blocked. If he came up from the other side he'd definitely be escaping with some gear, or you'd die trying to stop him.
Move one square up. Cloak. Wand of lightning until its empty.
I did this on f23 (because I do dumb things sometimes). Lazer eye mobs were on the edge and cleared half of the mobs for me.
