The (paywalled) article doesn't explain it and it's not a phrase anyone uses.

Is it paywalled? I read it on chromium with ublock origin.

(I used these "advanced user" mode settings, but I think plain ublock origin works for this site)

Good news is that trust in the mainstream media in the west is at all time low, people are starting to realize how much they're being lied to. Gaza genocide might've been the turning point here where it became undeniable. However, another aspect of the story is that is China opening up means a lot more people will have direct experience seeing China. The whole visa free travel that China started to implement is an excellent way to get people to see what it's really like.
