It's good to see my state in the news for a good reason.

[-] Chozo@fedia.io 54 points 1 week ago

Texas here. Wishing I knew what that felt like.

I just saw the article on AI powered ammunition vending machines in OK and AL. Have you seen one in person? That's a wild concept.

That's great! And I think it's encouraging to see any good news at all, from any state, as we slide further toward fascism. That probably sounds pessimistic, but I truly believe they cannot possibly fight all of us, in the ballot boxes, or in the streets...

Kansas of all places. Nice.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 57 points 1 week ago

Kansas was also the state where they put abortion up for a referendum expecting people to vote to make it illegal and they did the opposite by a large margin.

Conservatives are less anti-abortion than their leadership would have you think. Especially the "no exceptions for anything no matter what" abortion bans that are happening.

Moderate conservatives really need to start stepping up and showing people they're the majority of that side.

It's not a political thing, it's a small town thing. Tina can go three towns over and get an abortion no big deal, if she can't then the town is stuck with an unwanted kid they either all gotta watch or simply watch die.

Cue the Republicans in Kansas targeting the court justices.

Next year at SCOTUS: "Just kidding about the states' rights we talked about."

I don’t see Kansas? You just mean in general?

[-] fubarx@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 week ago

Kansas is linked in there.

It's a little hard to follow all the double and triple negatives, but their voting 'No' on that ballot was what paved the road to this judgement.

The other states listed have their own constitutional amendments lined up to affirm the right to abortion.

[-] jeffw@lemmy.world -2 points 1 week ago

This case appears to be about a Senate Bill and one other law? Not anything like a constitutional amendment

[-] TheRealKuni@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

The Kansas Supreme Court ruled (rightly) that by precedent and voter will, Kansas’s constitution protects the right to abortion and does not allow the state congress to legislate on it. Hence the Senate bill cannot stand, because it would be a violation of the state constitution.

This is because of precedent and this ballot measure from 2022 which specifically said, by a no vote, that the state legislature does not have the authority to pass laws regarding abortion.

[-] jeffw@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

To be clear, the original comment said that an amendment was “in the pipeline this year.” Not that it was done 2 years ago. So, once again, Im clarifying that the original comment is still incorrect

[-] TheRealKuni@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Sure, yeah, I was confused about what they meant too.

[-] xmunk@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 week ago

Supreme Court: Wait, we didn't mean states' rights like that!

[-] SaintWacko@midwest.social 4 points 1 week ago

No, that article was the first I had heard of them!
