They keep saying leftists won, but it seems to be coalition with centrists?

Is this just Western media calling liberals leftists again or did France actually elect a real leftist government?

the left coalition got a plurality but nobody got a majority. the left coalition, centrist coalition, and fash coalition all got roughly similarly-sized blocks of seats.

so it's gonna be a gridlocked shitshow.

liberalism "we voted the fash out!"

The fash still hold a large chunk of seats

Ah, liberalism.

yeah keeping the fash out but not actually, y'know, putting someone else in is just going to lead to a series of crippling political crises

I wonder if fascists have ever capitalized on those before

le pen couldn't keep her racism towards one of france's most famous footballers to herself and the left coalition aligned itself well with the centrist coalition to avoid splitting the vote for most races and Macron is extremely unpopular. result: le pen's national rally makes gains overall, comprises most of the right block, which can't be said for melenchon's or macron's parties. a modest win for a slapdash modestly left coalition in terms of stopgapping macron and the fascists, but in the midst of gains for the fascists.

the great victory results in a holding pattern until the fash surge again. similar to the UK.

The left union is soc Dem/centrist. There is the PCF (French communist party) in it, which has been soc dem, NPA (new anticapitalist party, which has split up), LFI (Mélenchon's party), EELV (Greens) and the PS (socialist party, which has been between center left and right depending on the people in it. Macron came from there, former president Hollande is still in it)
