That's the spirit! Get those expectations way up there! Tell people that this movie will change their lives and the way they understand the fundamental meaning of cinema itself! There is no promise too big to attach to a movie, no load so heavy that it can't be carried by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman! If this movie doesn't crush every box office record ever set, then we all might as well hurl ourselves into the nearest industrial garbage shredder, because life won't be worth living anymore!

What else would you expect Bob Iger to say?

"Our newest MCU film is going to be OK. You should see it if you feel like, but no biggie if you don't. I admit we could have done better."

30,000,000,000,000.00$ in gross, world wide sales. While it does have it's valid criticisms, the movie is fantastic. If any movie from the mcu could "reignite" the franchise, it will be this one.

I agree with Iger that this probably will be the biggest MCU movie in a long time. However I'd argue that's in spite of the MCU not because of it. They're simultaneously cashing in on Deadpool hype and bringing the primary X-Man into the MCU. Obviously we don't know what direction it's going to to go in until the movie comes out but I have a hard time imagining that if it tries to merge into the "main" MCU world that it'd make sense tonally. If it fucks off into the weird "multiverse" stuff that Dr Strange, Loki, and Wanda seem to be doing I have to guess subsequent stuff will be more nothingburgers that people are apathetic about

I personally think people liked Deadpool being mostly it's own thing. I think keeping him only tangentially involved is going to be the key to success but I doubt Disney's ability to be restrained enough to do that

I agree. One highly anticipated movie cannot make up for continuous flops, that are inundated with increasingly convoluted storylines, and plagued with shitty writing.

I think this movie will trend more towards the MCU's dead cat bounce as opposed to a resurgence, and that's assuming it's not hot garbage. My expectations are low.

But I don't want another biggest movie. Wish they could keep'em small, constrained, cheap, and focused.

[-] Anyolduser@lemmynsfw.com 5 points 1 month ago

That requires careful, thoughtful writing and preparation. How could they ever manage that? They wouldn't even get to yell "we'll fix it in post" or make things up as they go along!

[-] Fades@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

But if they do that then every loses their mind and call it mid for not being an Oscar award winner

[-] Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

The article can't make up it's mind what "slump" means. If it's repeated flops, then they already mentioned Guardians 3 being a success. If it's a trend of flops, then the criteria would be more than just a successful film.

What else is he supposed to say? Yeah that's one shitty movie.

Bob Iger: "Yeah, Deadpool and Wolverine is complete trash, don't even bother showing up for Captain America 4."

[-] BleatingZombie@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

I loved the first two, but something has me extremely skeptical for this one. I think it's because I've synonymized "heavy marketing" with "bad movie"

That and the fact that my personal view of Ryan Reynolds (and Rob McElhenny) has skewed more negative ever since they bought a soccer team and then made a show flexing that fact. They just come across as the opposite of relatable now

Totally understand. It almost feels like Ryan Reynolds is gonna say "the hiearchy of power in the MCU is about to change".
