Ok, everyone always knew that they are much younger than dinosaurs but the etymology is something like living under the earth because they were found there and were believed to have lived like moles because why else would their bodies end up under the earth.
It's a theory.
Same for the fish, the cycads, and the ferns. But not the unicorns.
Some took to the sky and that's how we have aerial fossils in the upper atmosphere. Surely from the great flood that's in every ancient culture.
