watching that horrified me esp when he came back with a mask and it came out he was purposefully not telling people

just what the fuck even my trashy coworkers know to stay home when sick. i get it's the motherfucking olympics but come the fuck on. i wonder if he'll be able to compete again at that level.

He should be banned from competition for concealing his disease, but that probably won't happen. Putting that sort of strain on himself while he's suffering from covid, though? Athletic career is probably over.

He should be banned, fined, and have any previous awards revoked. This should be the death of his career and the salting of his record.

One of Michael Jordan’s most celebrated moments is when he got the flu, showed up to the NBA finals, and won. It seems like American society will consider this an epic win instead of a selfish move

Honestly that should’ve gotten him at least temporarily banned. Doing it with covid is so much worse though.

I agree but yanks have reduced Covid to “just the flu,” so to them it’s no different

this guy pissed me off so much, just giving a potentially career destroying RESPIRATORY ILLNESS to dozens if not hundreds of atheletes just to get a FUCKING BRONZE

Symptoms of a broken system etc... A bronze medal in the Olympics is well worth it in the eyes of someone who has dedicated his entire life (so far) to achieve this. It is short sighted, ignorant and extremely negligent, but this just mirrors societies attitude to COVID right now. On the other hand we elevate sports competition to matters of nationalistic pride, heroism, even politics and one of the greatest forms of vicarious achievements. An athlete at that level has already very little concern for their own health, likely taking PED of some form and pushing his body beyond it's limits. I find it difficult to be particularly mad at him. He did as everyone expected him to.

getting gold wouldn't have justified it. actually new rule; for every athlete that competes with with covid their medals don't count and one additional medal is deducted from their countries tally

those people come in contact with the covid every day that they go outside, what's the big deal?

much better to give people covid for an olympic bronze than for a mcdouble

[-] goferking0 5 points 2 months ago

yeah I got bronze but would have gotten gold without covid

We all want to stop running this race against COVID. But to do that, we have to turn around and face it.

In other words, nothing will be done.

Requirements for hospitals to report COVID data were also lifted in May, though that policy will be reversed later this month and will become mandatory come November. Still, that's a good chunk of time with incomplete or inadequate hospital data, and lacking that, it's hard to know what the pandemic really looks like.

thonk pretty convenient, what else is happening in the US in November

'Morally I'm not so sure...' =)

[-] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 2 points 2 months ago

Rather refreshing given that the other day we had a LIB in here saying that it was okay since there wasn't a rule against it. Imagine not realizing laws aren't morals but also making that mistake with non-government organizations.doomjak
