I don't think an ostrich in a zoo would be any weirder to him than a gorilla in a zoo is to us. Speaking of gorillas - when I was at the San Diego Zoo, they had a group of gorillas just chilling out quietly in their enclosure while the humans outside were going crazy waving their arms around and making hooting noises.

I dunno about US big bird, but dutch big bird is canonically a blue heron.
