The brown things are not termites, they're pupae cases of another insect. Try vacuuming all that up and keeping an eye on it

this isnt termites

maybe, i have no idea. but ill tell you what you want to hear!

[-] rouxdoo@lemmy.world 12 points 2 months ago

That's a terrible picture will nothing to indicate scale but assuming those brown capsule looking things are about 1/4 inch long that looks like fly pupae. Is the location near trash can or compactor? Had you previously noticed maggots?

[-] nieminen@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

Sorry, thought it was clearer than it was

They are about 1/4 inch, brown, and hollow. Little crunchy.

does it taste salty or a little fruity?

[-] protist@mander.xyz 10 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

A little bitter, with pronounced notes of drywall and batt insulation, and a subtle hint of mouse droppings

Yep, and @nieminen@lemmy.world if they're hollow, they're living out their adult lives elsewhere (likely in the building). These are just signs that they used it as a pupation site.

Thank you. I've seen no evidence of them, and they were below some baseboards put in long ago. I'm hoping it's an issue that no longer exists ๐Ÿ˜‚

Cool entomological fact: Cockroaches and termites (and also praying mantises) are really closely related, and many cockroaches have the ability to digest lignin, aka wood, just like termites

[-] ChaoticNeutralCzech@feddit.org 1 points 2 months ago

Floorboards also tend to have gaps so all kinds of insects can hide underneath.

I see roach eggs and other blurry stuff

[-] pomfegranate@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

Search up cockroach eggs. Looks like that to me

[-] nieminen@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Yeah that seems to be the consensus. Thank you for weighing in

[-] echo@lemmings.world 5 points 2 months ago

It doesn't immediately look like termites, but you've cropped/zoomed in so tight that there may be missing information that would help.

[-] nieminen@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

There's no obvious damage around (just some old mold and water damage (washer room))

[-] nieminen@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Took this a little further out

[-] echo@lemmings.world 2 points 2 months ago

I still don't see anything there that suggests termites.

It doesn't look like termites, but that's definitely signs of some other bug ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

[-] lemmyng@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 months ago
