I'm still salty and grumpy about that stupid $200 fine (I'll have spent $400 on parking fines this year) and trying not to beat myself up for being uniquely absent-minded or inattentive.

But I am proud of my little accomplishment: getting JUST under an hour at terminal parking at thr airport. I managed to squeeze in getting lost on the way in, having to turn around twice, a Macca's order and eating it and a goodbye photo... then literally running back and rushing out and finding an empty exit lane. Two minutes longer and I'll have been slugged another $17 (not even $14 like the website says!)

take that universe

Now to grab some rice from MKS (to store where exactly I don't know), go home and do so many chores.

It was exactly how it was when we were best mates. Nothing's changed ❤️

We did the Box Hill miniature rail today. It's a good little spot with a nice track. From what I've heard it's not as busy as the Diamond Creek railway so the lines are much better

I just sold something on eBay that had been up so long I'd forgotten I even had the listing there. I had to go and retrieve it from my op shop bags, it's lucky I haven't gotten around to dropping them off yet!

I bought a box of chiko rolls on Friday. They go good in the air fryer. Better than expected

I got my gardening mojo back once I started working on my assignment. Then I stabbed my finger with a stick and had to come in for first aid. Not too much bleeding, but I managed to jam to point in along the finger and it's a bit hurty, plus probably high infection risk. I guess as far as my weeds were concerned I was in the middle of a murderous rampage, so probably counts as fair self defence.

Ok, how did I go for identifiability? I think only one is obscure enough to be an issue. This was fun!

My finger is now very sore. I think I might have bruised the bone ☹️

[-] melbaboutown@aussie.zone 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I can’t take constantly being behind on dishes and having them sit. It’s gross. I’m considering a bench top dishwasher… ideally I’d do it by hand every day but this is the chore I consistently struggle with the most.

Has anyone here had one?

Appliances online have dish drawers for like 1000-2000 but I don’t think I’ll be doing that. (Been budgeting my buns off but have dental coming up.)

I’m looking at the benchtop dishwashers in the $400 ballpark, and it would have to be the kind with a renter friendly adapter that attaches to the tap.

[-] StudChud@aussie.zone 6 points 2 weeks ago

I've never used a bench top dishwasher but I will be if I move again and the next place doesn't have a dishwasher. This is the first place I've ever lived in that has a dishwasher, and I never want to go back

Unsure how much they are or if they have them, but Kids off the Kerb might have a refurbished one. I got my fridge, washing machine, and dryer from them, they teach disadvantaged youth how to refurbish appliances.

My fridge is still going strong after 9 years or so, and the washing machine has only just carked it (I think I just need to replace the drain part though).

They might have something for cheaper than retail 🤷🏼‍♀️

I had some good daytime and even walked a bit but then crashed and woke in the night…

Time to get some more activity in the Food Australia instance. Vicariously posting all the stuff that looks good to me and is fairly cheap/doable. I’m thinking of a pasta salad you make ahead in the cool of the evening/night and refrigerate for the next day.

Melbcat is still sooky and a bit off. She’s really lethargic and either sleeping or cuddling with me like a teddy bear. Multiple panicked calls have been made to the vets over the past few days. But she’s still eating and drinking with no breathing problems so I’ll just keep an eye on her.

I forgot to say I think I’ve gained the trust of the magpies. I’ve backed off on feeding them due to potential dependence or overweight but when I came outside one was just hanging out a meter from me and seeing what I was up to. I had to awkwardly shuffle around it to be on my way without scaring it off. Sometimes a different one will sit on the fence and watch me spritz the plants.

Cleaned stove, benches and sink area, loaded dishwasher, doing washing to get as much as possible done before child's birthday party this arvo. One of the Minipeelers cousins is having a birthday, and although she's much younger than my kids they're excited to go and are pretty good sports about it. Earlier in the year another younger cousin had a Dr themed birthday party and I was delighted to see my kids happily submit to being patients to many doctors coat wearing small girls administering candy medicines lol. Some of us saw the "medicine" table and went "Ayo I remember parties like this!"

Did this weekend go past quicker than normal or is it just me?

[-] melbaboutown@aussie.zone 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

TW injections, mention of needle phobiaBeen practicing sub q injections on an unfortunate banana with some green food dye. Ideally I’d be using a training kit but mostly see the intramuscular or phlebotomy practice pads being sold.

I’m pretty decent at delivering it but man the uncapping and changing the needle over post draw up is fiddly and tough… it’s a balance of strength and fine motor movements because both are kind of stuck on stiffly, but you can’t overdo the force because you risk giving yourself a needle stick or dropping it. It’s also hard when your thumbs bend backwards. (Not normal.)

I did drop the needle when descending upon the unlucky fruit the first time but it’s ok as it was just practice. I recapped because I have no sharps bin yet and might just use that syringe over and over to avoid wasting them. But then repeated removals might make it easier to remove the cap, when really what I need the most practice on is carefully twisting off the stiff new plastic.

Go me for doing this though. I had/have a mild needle phobia and am now working on giving them.

[-] stib@aus.social 5 points 2 weeks ago

@melbaboutown @Baku What do you do with the green banana?

Thanks for the TW BTW. I don't know if you know there's a built-in content-warning function on mastodon; if you're using the web page look in the row of buttons below the text input, there's a warning icon. If you hit that boi it will apply a content warning that will hide the body of your text and just show the warning until the user clicks in. On mobile apps it might look like an eye or an exclamation mark etc, depending on the app.

It's been an entertaining Test, but 2.5 days? I guess I'll read a book instead. Hopefully Brisbane's a bit more drawn out.

[-] just_kitten@aussie.zone 6 points 2 weeks ago

Never mind. The only thing that was accomplished today was washing (and now drying) the clothes - ended up having a solid 4-5 hr nap in the arvo. I almost never sleep during the day. Just utterly exhausted. If I take one day off my meds all this sleep descends on me. But I do feel more rested though, which is why I do it. I don't feel like I can truly get restful sleep otherwise. I should talk to the psych about this...

I have to at least unpack the remaining clothes though, I'm sick of the opened boxes on my bedroom floor. It's not hard, open the ikea hanging storage thing, put t shirts and pants in there, everything else on hangers... them more sleep.

I have a Le Cruset crepe pan that just has all this black stuff burnt to it. Happened the first time I used it and I haven't been able to get it off. Any tips for removing it? Or should I try for warranty because I think the pans themselves are meant to have lifetime, the coating only so long

[-] TheWitchofThornbury@aussie.zone 7 points 2 weeks ago

The black stuff is probably burnt on pancake batter or similar which has polymerised. Gonna be tough to get off. OK, Le Creuset puts heat tolerant enamel on as the coating on their pans, so this might work. Enamel is a glass, which doesn't react to strong alkali or acid but is fragile to impacts and scratching. Once cracked, it's ruined as cookware as you really don't want glass shards in your dinner.

First, fill the pan with water, add a squirt of dishwashing liquid and put the pan on a very gentle simmer for an hour or so. Watch it like a hawk so it doesn't boil dry - top up with hot water as needed. Then let it cool a bit, tip out most of the water and scrub with a plastic scourer.

If that doesn't work to lift the black bits, then its time for the heavy duty stuff:

  1. Mix up a slurry of bicarb or baking soda with dishwashing liquid to make an alkali intense treatment - which degrades the polymerisation chemically - the consistency of wet snot is what you're looking for. Slather this on the black bits and cover with a layer of cling film. Leave the pan in a warm spot for a day or so, then rinse off. Try scrubbing with a plastic scourer on the now weakened black bits. If some comes off, then repeat process once.

  2. If there's still some black bits remaining after that, then what remains is resistant to alkali. So try an acid intense treatment such as a vinegar/salt/flour slurry (with cling film) to further degrade the polymerised black bits. The paste recipe is 1/3 cup flour, 1/3 cup salt and enough vinegar to make a slurry. Put this ONLY on the black bits not the whole pan, and lay it on thicc. This too needs to sit on the black bits under cling film for a day or so and then scrubbed. Don't soak the whole pan in straight vinegar as this will loosen the enamel from the underlying cast iron and cause it to flake off. Barkeepers Friend is an alternative to the paste recipie.

If none of these work either by themselves or together, then the pan is probably ruined. If the only stuff remaining is in a network of cracks, the pan IS ruined and should be discarded. Le Creuset probably won't refund if the problem occurred as a result of leaving the pan on the heat after using it, as they advise prompt cleanup in their instructions.

I know, I know, it sounds like a whole lotta work. Le Creuset is expensive, and very good quality, but does need to be cared for properly and not abused.
