Uber raised the minimum age requirement for most of its new drivers in California to 25 on Thursday under rules the company said are necessary because of the rising costs of commercial auto insurance in the state.

The new rule applies only to drivers signing up to transport passengers with Uber’s ride-hailing platform, and not for those delivering food with Uber Eats. Previously drivers as young as 19 could sign up.

Wouldn't that count as age discrimination?

Age discrimination against people for being too young is legal, it's only illegal to discriminate against people for being too old

And adding on to that, I believe it aligns with the minimum age for renting a car in the US. As in, if you try renting a car while under 25, you usually need to pay a premium for similar, insurance reasons.

I think a lot of companies will straight up not rent one to you if you aren't 25+.

No, it only works the way that most benefits people who actually bother to vote.

Why would they care about the costs? It's not like they're the ones paying for the insurance.

FTA

All 50 states require commercial insurance for drivers to earn money with a ride-hailing service. Uber maintains commercial auto insurance for drivers — including at least $1 million of liability coverage once a ride is accepted. Personal auto insurance typically doesn’t cover activity on ride-hailing apps.

Bullshit they do. When I delivered food for them I had to pay for my own insurance. They never once mentioned anything about providing "commercial insurance". I also had to lie to my insurance company about delivering to keep them from raising my rates to the point where I wouldn't make any profit.
