RULES (updated 01/22/25)

  1. Be respectful: no harassment, hate speech, bigotry, and/or trolling. To be concise, disrespect is defined by escalation.
  2. Encourage conversation in your OP. This means including heavily implicative subject matter when you can and also engaging in your thread when possible. You won't be punished for trying.
  3. Avoid controversial topics (politics or societal debates come to mind, though we are not saying not to talk about anything that resembles these). There's a guide in the protocol book offered as a mod model that can be used for that; it's vague until you realize it was made for things like the rule in question. At least four purple answers must apply to a "controversial" message for it to be allowed.
  4. Keep it clean and SFW: No illegal content or anything gross and inappropriate. A rule of thumb is if a recording of a conversation put on another platform would get someone a COPPA violation response, that exact exchange should be avoided when possible.
  5. No solicitation such as ads, promotional content, spam, surveys etc. The chart redirected to above applies to spam material as well, which is one of the reasons its wording is vague, as it applies to a few things. Again, a "spammy" message must be applicable to four purple answers before it's allowed.
  6. Respect privacy as well as truth: Don’t ask for or share any personal information or slander anyone. A rule of thumb is if something is enough info to go by that it "would be a copyright violation if the info was art" as another group put it, or that it alone can be used to narrow someone down to 150 physical humans (Dunbar's Number) or less, it's considered an excess breach of privacy. Slander is defined by intentional utilitarian misguidance at the expense (positive or negative) of a sentient entity. This often links back to or mixes with rule one, which implies, for example, that even something that is true can still amount to what slander is trying to achieve, and that will be looked down upon.

The rituals make no sense to me at all. Everyday rituals are also weird, bearable. But to take time off, and then do, this. It exaggerates the feeling of non-belonging.

A lot of people aren't into this. A lot. They just stay quiet because they've been told they're wrong to not be into it. You're not alone here. Just do what makes you happy and wait it out. That's what I'm doing

People to me are mostly alien. I have no idea why they do most of what they do.

There are many who don't belong. I guess you can nominally belong to that group like I do?

They walk onto a wall 2 times. I say: there's the wall. Watch out.

They rather watch a tv novella where someone else walks into the same wall. They conclude: it's a normal thing to do.

They walk onto a wall a 3rd time.

Whats that about?

Maybe it makes them feel better about themselves?

It’s not just you man. You need some good chosen family to spend the holidays with in a way that makes sense to you.

The only interesting people are the ones that are different. The self awareness to question is a type of intelligence filter.

I look at this time of year as the official peasants vacation block on the calendar. I'm not bothered that it exists, or the ways stupid people are exploited. I think the fact we are only given the most useless and shortest days are the biggest thing to gripe about.

Even in a biblical context, while the date of Jesus' birth is not disclosed, the circumstances of the story preclude any possibility that happened at the winter solstice. It was simply adopted as such because of the preexisting festivities of the winter solstice. The entire holiday as a Christian thing is only tradition and not biblical. Technically, no one belongs with this one. Every ritual surrounding the xmass celebration is adopted from extra biblical sources too.

I'm atheist, but find it funny that the whole thing is a sham. The sad part is how the months following are peak suicide season in most of the west. What should be a vacation is a massive tax.
