In Iceland I think there's a law against giving your child an embarrasing name. It's one law that I understand

[-] zackleys@kbin.social 55 points 11 months ago

We actually have a committe called "Mannanafnanefnd" which rougly translates to "Human name committee"and if you want to use a non-typical name for your child you have to apply for permission from them.

"Mannanafnanefnd"

Who watches the watchers?

[-] eggymachus@sh.itjust.works 28 points 11 months ago

Presumably the Nefnanafnanefnd

[-] IndiBrony@lemmy.world 22 points 11 months ago

Who keeps falling asleep on the keyboard for these naming conventions?

[-] madcaesar@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago

But who will watch the Nefnanafnanefnd?

[-] Omgarm@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago

I heard that names have to be -son or -dottir able. Is that still true?

Dottiedottir is just silly and so is Seanson

[-] MonkderZweite@feddit.ch 7 points 11 months ago

Mannanafnanefnd

Cthulhu approved.

a completely understandable law to prevent mental stress/depression down the line.

[-] BastingChemina@slrpnk.net 9 points 11 months ago

In France it's the person who record the name that can report it if it seems inappropriate.

Then there is a procedure to decide if the name can stay at it is or if it needs to be changed

[-] Lininop@lemmy.ml 30 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

As if changing your name would do anything lol

"actually my name is Beth now, I changed it"

"yeah whatever IKEA"

I'm all for being able to make your kid what you want, but I would definitely support a law in the US that stops you from being named these types of names that will get them bullied and picked on.

Whether it be Abcde or whatever the hell Ellon named his spawn, we could stand to have common sense naming laws to avoid the type of situation in this post going forward. And yes, I know it's probably in the UK because it's Daily Mail UK, but it's a problem worldwide if you ask me.

[-] lvxferre@lemmy.ml 17 points 11 months ago

whatever the hell Ellon named his spawn

ChildX, most likely.

[-] skulblaka@kbin.social 21 points 11 months ago

Worse: X AE A-XII Musk (only named this because X Æ A-12 was not acceptable to California regulations due to having non-English characters both in the form of numbers and of Æ), and later, another named Exa Dark Sideræl Musk (nicknamed "Y"). Both of these were with Grimes. Both of these are the official names given to these children, that is what is written on their birth certificates.

However, they were also preceded by around 8 other children with different women given much more normal names, so it's unclear how much influence Grimes had on the decision making here. X AE A-XII in particular though I will definitely attribute to Elon because his fixation on the letter X extends back decades at this point.

[-] lvxferre@lemmy.ml 11 points 11 months ago

Wait. What?

Sometimes reality is even funnier than our shitty jokes! (Except for the kids. I feel genuinely sorry for them.)

[-] Annoyed_Crabby@monyet.cc 10 points 11 months ago

Did he just give his kids name a serial number of manufactured machine

[-] Default_Defect@midwest.social 6 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

If he continued to have kids with Grimes he 100% would have done S E X Y with their names, same as the Tesla models, hes insane.

[-] bric@lemm.ee 1 points 11 months ago

And for reference, X AE A-XII is meant to be pronounced "ex ash archangel". Which I'm sure is obvious to everyone that reads it lol

[-] Default_Defect@midwest.social 11 points 11 months ago

You're not far off.

[-] metaltoilet@beehaw.org 2 points 11 months ago

Or normalizing the practice of choosing your own name if you don't like yours. (though maybe that wouldn't work well for younger kids)

[-] June@lemm.ee 19 points 11 months ago

I went to school with a Ben Dover. He tried to go by Benjamin but the little shits we were we wouldn’t let him.

[-] SonicBlue03@sh.itjust.works 2 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

I went to school with a Hugh Jardon my senior year.

[-] Spellinbee@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

My brother went to school with a Ben Dover. As you can said, he was picked on a lot too.

[-] Franzia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 11 months ago

Normalize choosing your own name. Parents are dumber and more entitled than ever.

[-] Kase@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago

Agreed, honestly. Broadly, the less accountability we give parents (more is better), the less control we should give them too. Kids deserve a safe home, but we do a bad job at ensuring that, and at the very least they don't deserve to be trapped in an unsafe one with minimal rights and parents who are allowed to be dictators. Speaking from personal experience, at least.
