Well, Chauvin is serving 20+ years on federal charges and 20+ years on state charges

Trump can't pardon state charges

[–] slaneesh_is_right@lemmy.org 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There is a lot of things he can't do and still does and americans are like, please sqeeze my balls harder mr.

There is no mechanism that would allow Trump to release Derek Chauvin from prison and the effort to create one would be too much effort for Trump himself to commit to.

The rest of his presidency would be wasted on just focusing on that issue.

Trump is all about maximum impact with very little effort on his part.

It's not worth it for Trump

[–] Crashumbc@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

No, it is absolutely is worth it. This isn't about D.C. , it is about under mining state rights to strengthen his dictatorship...

[–] HappySkullsplitter@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago

Best he could do is pardon the federal charges just to spark outrage and further sow division

I'd expect that much, but Chauvin isn't leaving jail either way

He wanted to do his time at a federal prison for safety as part of his plea deal. Maybe a pardon sends his ass back to state prison.

[–] 474D@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Can you pardon someone against their will?

[–] KickMeElmo@sopuli.xyz 15 points 2 days ago

Seems they can reject it, like the one J6 MAGA-ite who did.

[–] RedditRefugee69@lemmynsfw.com 11 points 2 days ago

I think you can decline it.

[–] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

You almost certainly want to do prison time in federal prison vs state prison, from a safety and quality of life perspective.

As bad as prison can be, at least federal prison have AC and reasonably upheld standards of care.

Cast him down with the sodomites

General population

[–] bradinutah@thelemmy.club 14 points 2 days ago

I'm certain the Governor of Minnesota won't be handing out a pardon in his case.

[–] Kichae@lemmy.ca 11 points 2 days ago

That's perfect, then! He can pardon him, really underscoring just how out of touch MAGA is, while also being totally and utterly impotent.

He will last exactly 30 seconds on the street. You can't have people follow law and order if you refuse to follow the law and order imposed by the people.

A jury found him guilty, by pardoning him you are making the claim that a trial by jury is not honored and this will cause vigilante justice.

Daniel Perry has been free after being convicted by a jury of peers to 25 years for murdering a protester after Texas Governor Abbott pardoned him, justice doesn't matter to them if they can score political points with their cult base.

https://apnews.com/article/army-sergeant-murder-parole-black-lives-matter-4b1d0c54b0de451642bcf1e8cd75a7e5

"Perry, who is white, was working as a ride-share driver when his car approached a demonstration in Austin. Prosecutors said he could have driven away from the confrontation with Foster, a white Air Force veteran who witnesses said never raised his gun.

A jury convicted Perry of murder, but Abbott called it a case of self-defense."

Thanks for the heads up. Just one more Nazi to shoot dead if I ever see them.

[–] RowRowRowYourBot@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

He has state charges as well so he will go to state prison

[–] oltastey@midwest.social 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Genpop in a Minnesota prison. That pardon will definitely be a death sentence.

[–] nick@midwest.social 1 points 14 hours ago

Works for me!

[–] goldfish_brain@lemmy.world 33 points 2 days ago (4 children)

You want riots? Cuz that’s how you get riots. Then again, they totally want riots.

[–] SereneSadie@lemmy.myserv.one 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'm genuinely worried there's going to be a US Tiananmen Square equivalent at this point. And I don't just mean the massacre, but the attempts to cover it up as much as possible.

All while the world just sits back and hums loudly.

[–] fruitycoder@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Trump did praise China for that massacre before

Of. Fucking. Course. He. Did.

What a goddamn anti-human demon.

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

a federal pardon only moves him from a (relatively) safe federal institution out-of-state, back home to minnesota--and a potentially much more hostile environment, to serve out his longer state sentence (and iirc, scotus has already rejected an appeal of state conviction)

[–] TommySoda@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

While i do agree that they want riots so they can do shit like martial law and all that, I think they're underestimating how pissed off everyone is. There's only so much bullshit they can expect us to put up with in such a short amount of time which I think is the biggest mistake they are making. Their "rapid fire" approach is only accelerating everyone's anger faster than if they were subtly destroying everything over the course of months.

[–] Rivalarrival@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think they're underestimating how pissed off everyone is.

Guy Fawkes masks and Luigi caps are all on backorder, with no ship dates before December 4th.

[–] Grass@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 days ago

a large group of people wearing both of those would certainly be a memorable visual

[–] lol_idk@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

“...we are in the process of the second American Revolution, which will remain bloodless if the left allows it to be.”

[–] Red_October@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago

They really are trying to get us to riot so they can Crack down even harder aren't they.

Wow so I guess everyone’s just going all in on the whole fascism speedrun thing

[–] TommySoda@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Do it, I fucking dare you.

[–] fruitycoder@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago
