Want to have a airgapped machine? Sure as hell won’t be running win11

[–] tazeycrazy@feddit.uk 4 points 2 months ago

Probably better using 7 or Xp if you don't need it going on the internet

[–] Godort@lemm.ee 4 points 2 months ago

I feel like this was already the case

Come children come to Linux. Debian is your new Father...

[–] BoulevardBlvd@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I mean yeah. At this point I have no other choice huh? I mean Jesus...

[–] turtle@lemm.ee 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

No doubt. I've been exploring Linux distros all day today.

Mint is solid, especially for newbies. I run Bazzite on my Legion Go and it generally outperforms Windows.

Thanks. I'm a semi-newbie, thinking about going with Debian, but just about to test it on a VM right now.

Linux Mint is based on Debian and is a bit more user friendly.

[–] turtle@lemm.ee 2 points 2 months ago

Thanks, I'm still considering my options. Mint is in the list of possibilities.

I was a Debian guy for years now. Running on all my servers and virtual machines, but never got to be satisfied with it enough to “format Windows” out of my main computer. Until one day I discovered Aurora and relatives. That’s it, that’s the endgame for me. Literally everything works out of the box including support for legacy Nvidia cards, g-sync, scaling etc. and I can fully understand and like their design decisions (hell, with brew it will be just like having a Mac). I’m done with Windows before this year ends.

Just gonna leave this here. Do with it what you will.

While that's a good site to be aware of in general, it does nothing to help with this issue. All that site does is activate Windows, it does not allow you to make a local user account.

[–] ThelVadam@programming.dev 11 points 2 months ago

It does provide you with access to the IoT LTSC or LTSC editions which I believe would still allow you to skip the need to set up a Microsoft account.

I could be wrong on that detail, it’s been a while.

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

It also has the ability to activate Windows 10 long-term support. Not a permanent solution, but lets you kick that can down the road.

Microsoft: fuck you if you can't afford internet

[–] empireOfLove2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Also fuck you if your wifi drivers aren't built in to windows.

[–] ReversalHatchery@beehaw.org 7 points 2 months ago

but above all, fuck you if you care at all about your privacy, and if you think it is more important than our profits

[–] DacoTaco@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Actually, setup allows for wifi drivers to be loaded in lol

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 19 points 2 months ago

Microsoft made some bullshit mandatory to lock in users as data chattel?

Shocked! Yes, shocked I am.

[–] SpicyLizards@reddthat.com 19 points 2 months ago

Oof.

We’re removing the bypassnro.cmd script from the build to enhance security and user experience of Windows 11. This change ensures that all users exit setup with internet connectivity and a Microsoft Account.

Absolute bullshit

GREAT now setting up computers for work is just going to be THAT much more of hassle. Thanks MS.

[–] crazyminner@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 months ago

I use Linux on my work computer lol.

[–] dev_null@lemmy.ml 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'm never deleting the Windows 11 installer ISO I downloaded months ago.

[–] ReversalHatchery@beehaw.org 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'm never, ever downloading a windows 11 ISO

[–] dev_null@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 months ago

Well, so am I. :D

[–] ramble81@lemm.ee 5 points 2 months ago

So even TFA says it’s not completely going away. It’s just switching from a command to a registry entry. Additionally Windows 11 Enterprise most likely won’t be affected or LTSC.
