My 14.5 yo laptop is still working with a new SSD

This hapoened to me but with a 128 spectrum.

I'm moving soon and was packing up my office closet. Found my old college laptop and figured I better make sure nothing was stored on it before I tossed it. Pulled the removable battery (‼️⁉️) out and plugged in the power adapter. I couldn't believe that it started Windows XP off of spinning rust faster than any modern device I own. They really don't make them like they used to.

Oh shit does that work? I'm in the exact situation and was trying to figure out how to get this laptop to boot.

I, too, have been able to resurrect laptops by removing the battery. In theory, the battery should be prepared but bypassed while on charger but in practice a lot of laptops are routed such that battery failure means inoperability.

Definitely, at least with this Dell laptop circa 2007 - I didn't want to cause a fire and iirc, the battery was already trashed at its EOL. Pulling the battery at least let me power on the laptop without any risk from having the battery inserted.

Well damn, that's great. Thanks!

I've been there. But then I fixed it. Call me a necromancer, because old friends can come back from the dead too.

God, I've felt such pain letting go of old computers that no longer function; with some, that had been with me for a long time, I went through significant effort to try to resuscitate them. Really makes me think that I'm not prepared for when our pet dogs go...

You will never experience anything worse than the loss of a dog.

Change the BIOS battery. It usually helps a lot

me, pouring kool-aid into my laptop’s keyboard a month before the accidental damage warranty expired…

Nail polish remover here 💅🏻 apart from the track pad not working anymore, it seems to have staved off most expected damage. Well, apart from a giant white stain across the entire keyboard, that is

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 21 hours ago

I backed up all my stuff, took it outside, and poured extra super sugary kool-aid into it. I was alarmed when it started up and worked fine the first try.

The second try… it hung on the boot screen forever. I loved that laptop, and it cost me about 2kUSD… but free upgrade! I couldn’t pass it up. That was in 2011. I still use the upgrade I got, 14 years later, and it works amazingly (after maxing out its specs)
