We are working on improving load balancing today and distributing the instance across multiple servers. As a result, you may see some timeouts, thank you for your patience.
As always, thanks to the admins for keeping things up to date!
Thanks for all the work on the instance!
There seems to be a known bug which prevents people from subscribing to communities on different instances.
Thankfully this appears to be "just" a bug in the web ui, and shouldn't affect users of apps such as Jerboa (which I happen to be).
Things feel snappier.
Very snappy compared to the last few days.
Migrating to newer hardware with more memory and cpus pict-rs are being replicated, so you may see some images missing. Please be patient. If you have login/logout issues be sure to completely dump your browser cache to resolve that.
Oh, nice! The Firefox mobile login bug is fixed. Thanks!
fwiw, seems it got worse for me. before it would spin and if i'd refresh i'd be logged in, now the button kinda doesn't respond and nothing happens, refreshing does nothing, etc. i tried clearing cache and killing the browser.

Welcome to Lemmy v0.18.1-rc.4 This may have resolved the memory leak that we were experiencing which caused the occasional site timeouts.
Currently UI: 0.18.1-rc.7 BE: 0.18.1-rc.4 pict-rs is now running on a separate machine.
Wow! UI: 0.18.1-rc.10 BE: 0.18.1-rc.9-1-gf0e487f18 is so much better. What a fun holiday weekend for everyone. Thank you for still being here!
I'm keeping an eye on this PR
Once that one's merged it should massively improve database performance under load. Instead of doing tons of full table reads with joins to the communities table, it'll be doing much smaller, faster reads. Currently those full reads happen for every up/down vote.
Converting those blind full-table scans with joins into smaller targeted reads is gonna be a performance gamechanger
Edit: it was just merged!

Welcome to .. 0.18.2
@SDF@lemmy.sdf.org: Lemmy is now up to 0.18.4. This update fixes collapsed comments, and apparently 0.18.3 should have a massive performance improvement with regards to database accesses, so I think it would be good to update.
Collapsed comments are expanding if I upvote another comment.
Known issue, see lemmy-ui/#1545. The fix is already in the wings, we just need to wait for the next minor/hotfix release before we can receive it.
It's working pretty good for me. And federation is great. But I can't seem to upload photos. Maybe there's a file size cap.
Yeah, I've also been having issues where images I upload to the SDF instance don't seem to appear when my posts are viewed via other instances.
I've begun using 3rd party filehosts for my image uploads -- not that big of a deal since that's also what I had to do on old Reddit, but yeah... not ideal. I've been using catbox.moe now that imgur.com no longer guarantees indefinite hosting.

My UI isn't loading the necessary SVG files. When I try to load open them directly in the browser I get a 404.
There's something wrong in federating with kbin.social communities, most of the posts are missing.
Example (click to sort by New):
- https://lemmy.sdf.org/c/tech@kbin.social → 4 posts in past 24 hours
- https://lemmy.zip/c/tech@kbin.social → 15 posts in past 24 hours
- https://lemmy.world/c/tech@kbin.social → 14 posts in past 24 hours
- https://kbin.social/m/tech/newest (original) → 17 posts in past 24 hours
A new version was just released. One of the new features is parallel federation, in addition to reduced CPU usage. Hopefully if we upgrade to it, we'll see reduced federation lag with lemmy.world
To be honest I never notice the lag with lemmy.world but I'm excited for the new version regardless.
Is there a way for a user to check what version of Lemmy SDF Chatter is using?
If you scroll to the bottom of the page it shows the version on the bottom-right. Currently says BE: 0.18.2 The BE stands for Back-End. Sometimes the Front-End of Lemmy gets updated separately from the Back-End, hence the distinction.
Thank you!
Now from chrome I see this when I go to lemmy.sdf.org. I cleaned the cache, same story
Am I the only one with failed CSS file fetch ?
It looks fine to me on both Chrome and Firefox.
I'm seeing UI: unknown version
in the footer.
