‘How can a woman marry a man who won’t marry?’

I’m not sure I understand.

I have tried multiple times to get union jobs but they're less than 5% of jobs in the last few communities I have lived in. My wife and daughter have union jobs. But it's certainly not like they're available for everyone.

She's talking about those who wouldn't want to join a union. Because "they suck away your paycheck with union dues" or "they encourage lazy workers" or "I make just as much without them". In other words, people who miss the point entirely and don't realize how unions have already helped them.

The fact that union power has been destroyed in our little slice of history is true, but it's not the point.

Yeah their impact has mostly been lost too. I've never had a job where I worked less than 55 hrs/6 days. Pensions don't exist. Most jobs in my area pay around $12/hr. Even skills like welding pay $15. You need three incomes per household just to survive on those wages.

World War 2 was used as an excuse to crack down and destroy them.

I guess the quote is from 1905. I'm in my fifties and have never seen broad union involvement anywhere.

Yeah - Mother Jones was a huge union activist in the early 1900’s. If you have heard of the newspaper, it was named after her.

Heres a good Knowing Better about the history of labor and union suppression.

People paid in blood for the 40 hour work week.

“ I can't understand why a woman would lower herself by marrying a man who is too afraid to join a labor union.”

sorry abt the downvotes ppl are so mean

That makes a lot more sense. I was struggling to parse that sentence out as being about civil union.

Thanks.

If one weren’t previously aware of Mother Jones as a labor rights figure I can totally see how that sentence would be almost impenetrable XD
