"When the Nazis took the Communists, I remained silent. I wasn't a communist, after all.

When they imprisoned the social democrats, I remained silent. I wasn't a social democrat, after all.

When they took the union members, I remained silent. I wasn't a unionist, after all.

When they took me, there was none left who could protest.

Martin Niemöller

Good English version too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_They_Came

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Thanks. I translated it on the fly, because it isn't on the English version of his bio page.

There's a lot of versions and variations of this, all saying the same thing. Including the comic above. I don't think any of them are wrong, as long as the message is heard :)

it feels pertinent to say that no, they didn’t come for the socialists first

they came for disabled people first

[–] Semjaza@lemmynsfw.com 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That disabled people, LGBTQ folks, as well as Roma and other Travellers aren't there, is telling.

But it is also heartening that the only real domestic policy loss the Nazis took was their anti-disabled people one. Mass protests and resistance against it worked to hold back the death and sterilisation machine.

I also assume the poem is only once in power, as the SA were killing socialists and Jews in an unofficial basis long before Hitler became Chancellor.

Many LGBTQ liberated from concentration camps at the end of WW2 were moved straight back into regular jails.

It's nice to see people standing up to ICE all across the country. They're being painted as criminals by the state (i.e. Trump), but REAL American citizens know that these people are heroes. Fuck ICE, fuck the cops that support ICE, and a very special double fuck you to Trump and his sycophants - hell has a dark hole waiting for all of you traitors.

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago (1 children)

By the state and most media. I can't believe how many people I know called LAs protests a riot because of the highlights of a tiny fraction of violence. Hell, given how ICE acts, part of me wishes it actually was a violent response since we're damned either way.

[–] ysjet@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Every single one of those fuckers calling it a riot had either pictures of ice assaulting people with clubs, rubber jacketed metal bullets and tear gas, or the exact same picture of one singular car on fire. I have to wonder if it was ice that set the car on fire for the photo op.

The fachist... I mean, the cops hate Wemo cars. They can't arrest the driver when they are pissed. Would not put it past them to light them on fire.

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

I think the waymo cars were a single person's thing, and there was some rock throwing at cops, and graffiti on everything, but in any large group you'll have a handful of people like that. It's far from a riot, I've seen people so worse after a sporting event.

No, as always its probably media representation, which isn't always to propagandize (although Fox certainly is); dramatic events get better ratings. People calling it riots are watching network TV news, ugh.

they will keep pushing people and pushing them and pushing them, until there is an actual uprising (not these protests that trump is calling "rebellion," but real sustained violence), which is what the fascists want: an excuse to switch to live ammunition. then it will be curfews, "papers please" checkpoints, and massacres

if you're skeptical, just look at some history, and try to find a reason why this won't be the case

keep yourself and your family safe

We can accept a few highly skilled and/or rich US refugees. But we don't have space for that common rabble.

[–] Lumisal@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If you look at history, you'll see the same thing happens whether you resist or not.

[–] dubyakay@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Oh ya? Provide some examples.

But you could also look at the war in Ukraine as a more recent example.

If no resistance happens, they'll make up imaginary resistance anyway.
