I'm along the GoM. We usually get sargassum here to some extent year round. The last couple years it has been really bad. To the point where the city public works dept has to come out to deal with it with heavy equipment.

It's so bad this year it makes wading in the surf unbearable. The waves are just heavy with sargassum.

It's completely decimated summer tourism in the Caribbean. The eastern side of any island is now just home to mountains of rotting seaweed and now even some of the western sides are affected. The Mayan Riviera has been hit especially hard. It also seems like the season starts earlier every year.
