Saw it in another thread, thought it might be interesting to share for people who find the Fossify one a bit basic: https://f-droid.org/packages/com.dot.gallery/

Aves is the way. For now, just fit and forget.

[–] devilish666@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

i used Aves Libre for gallery app, it's great...

"view network connections Allows the app to view information about network connections such as which networks exist and are connected."

That's a hell no from me.

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 18 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I asked the creator. The F-Droid version does not actually use network access. It is used to access mapping API from Mapbox.

Any chance you asked about why they need to know what wifi networks are around and which ones I am connected to?

EDIT: Sorry, missed the link. You did ask that question, and they literally ignored it in their answer.

[–] Onomatopoeia@lemmy.cafe 28 points 4 days ago

That's an Android thing - to get location data for the map, you need the network permission.

I know, it's fucked up - it was made this way in about Android 12.

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago

I linked you the entire response.

I thought it was very considerate and responsive that the creator replied immediately. I'm sure they would be happy to answer any follow-up that you have.

[–] Ulrich@feddit.org 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

WiFi networks are often used to get your location. Not sure for what purpose.

[–] BeardedBlaze@lemmy.world -3 points 4 days ago

Right, and a gallery app has zero reason to need that info.

[–] limerod@reddthat.com 10 points 4 days ago (1 children)

As the other commenter said. Its required to display location preview.

Android doesn't have a default internet permission. But, some OEMs allow that. For others you can use Netguard to limit connection for your apps.

[–] BeardedBlaze@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I don't even see that permission listed. That being said, it's a whole different permission than what I listed: "...information about network connections such as which networks exist and are connected." is different from requiring internet activity.

Comparing this app to Fossify Gallery is straight silly, because people that chose Fossify Gallery, chose it because it didn't have all this unnecessary garbage.

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That is how the location features work.

It's not actually present in the FDroid version in any case according to the creator.

[–] BeardedBlaze@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

"however the ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE permission was left over by mistake, but any actual NETWORK calls are completely disabled." Mistake huh? That's assuring lol.

[–] limerod@reddthat.com 0 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You could ask the developer himself or check the source since it is listed on github.

As for comparison to Fossify. I didn't make that comparison.

[–] BeardedBlaze@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I don't need to ask anything. OP posted a comparison, that really isn't. I made a point of one big reason why. You came here with the unrelated info.

[–] limerod@reddthat.com 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You don't need to act so dismissive. You literally posted about the network connection info permission. Someone asked and confirmed it was a remanant of a permission.

The fdroid version doesn't even connect to the internet according to them. This was being way too paranoid for no reason.

[–] BeardedBlaze@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

It doesn't change the fact that those permissions are necessary during install. Them saying "oh, don't worry about that, it was a mistake" is laughable.

This wasn't too paranoid for no reason, if you read what Fossify and their mission is about.

EDIT: spelling

[–] Turret3857@infosec.pub 4 points 4 days ago

Does it do Geo lookup? It might just be pinging OpenStreetMaps

[–] ByteMe@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Maybe it's because of the face recognition?

[–] BeardedBlaze@lemmy.world 9 points 4 days ago (2 children)

If it has face recognition, than it's a definite fuck no.

[–] bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)
[–] ByteMe@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

I think it has it for people grouping. Anyway

[–] kate@lemmy.uhhoh.com 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Why would it need network access for that? It’s pretty easy to do on device these days

[–] ByteMe@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

I dunno, just a guess

+1 for Aves (Libre ver.)

it'd sad that aves doesn't support jxl since for me its rather critical now.

[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 2 points 4 days ago

I saw that on Accrescent, I'll give it a try.

[–] drwankingstein@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

I found it doesn't have great performance sadly. Can be significantly slower then fossify for rendering images.

[–] jinx@lemmy.zip 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

that's really interesting, i've had the opposite experience

I am mostly using jxl images so that could be it, both of them are using third party libraries for it, but pretty much 99% of my gallery is JXL

more feature rich? According to the store description and screenshots, it has less features.

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

I use it as my primary gallery app. It works great.
