I knew the moment I read the headline (I blocked fake news) that all the did was give barbie an insulin pump. Most people are probably not versing themselves enough in barbie lore to learn the character is a diabetic otherwise, so how could they signal virtue if no one knows?

I suppose the caveat with health insurance applies here, no? I am not diabetic, but my exposure to diabetes via my uninsured grandmother and my uninsured ex wife is insulin injections via needles, finger sticks, etc. no fancy monitors or pumps.

Yeah pretty sure cgms are expensive.
In the US the cost would be $200-400 a month on average without insurance.
There are no open source alternatives, and the couple of options for DIY looping still use expensive "commodity off-the-shelf" approved CGMs and pumps.
