Image is from this article, of a Chilean copper quarry.

Title is a reference to Trump's social media post about copper, which was, as usual, mostly deranged.

Trying to follow Trump's administration is pretty difficult, but as of right now, he is threatening 30% tariffs on Mexico and the EU starting on August 1st, as well as new tariff announcements on a bunch of other countries (including, bizarrely, a 50% tariff on Brazil), and also apparently a 50% tariff on copper, which the US imports half its supply of and is, of course, a very important metal in many applications.

I'm not sure what the plan is to bring back domestic copper production beyond hoping that it just sorta works out, but prominent copper producers, such as Chile and Canada, seem both concerned and confused. Reuters had a line that made me chuckle:

Boric said he was awaiting official communication from the U.S. government, including whether the tariffs would include copper cathodes, and questioned "whether this will actually be implemented or not."

Big mood, Boric.

Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Pro-Russian Telegram Channels:

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.
https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.
https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.
https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.
https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.
https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.
https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine Telegram Channels:

Almost every Western media outlet.
https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.

Critical 1300 families benefit from Bolivarian government social programs in Caracas

The Bolivarian Government social programs continue to play a crucial role in maintaining public trust and addressing basic needs in Venezuela, especially in the capital city of Caracas. On July 13, 2025, more than 1,300 families were assisted through a coordinated Mega Social Program in the Renacer de la Patria Commune, located in the Caucagüita parish of Miranda state.

These efforts are part of the broader Antonio José de Sucre Plan, which aims to guarantee access to health services, nutrition, and social protection for vulnerable populations. In the face of prolonged economic challenges and international sanctions, such initiatives represent a key strategy to uphold social stability and strengthen grassroots governance.

...

The government has actively mobilized popular organizations and communal structures to improve the effectiveness of its social policies. By involving local leaders in refining the Gran Misión Madre Tierra Venezuela, officials aim to create a model of territorial management that prioritizes sustainability and community empowerment.

This approach aligns with Venezuela’s broader push toward decentralized governance and inclusive development, where local participation plays a central role in shaping national strategies.

What do people think about the significance and utility of decentralization in socialist governance? Is it a risk that opens you up to infilitration and weakens your ability to withstand imperialist pressure? Or is it a mandatory step to build the democrat grassroots governance and address the material conditions that socialism needs to sustain popular support?

UNICEF Condemns Killing of Children in Gaza as Malnutrition Crisis Deepens - Telesur English

Article

The Executive Director of UNICEF, Catherine Russell, has denounced the “unconscionable killing” of children in Gaza, following the deaths of seven minors in an Israeli airstrike on a water distribution center in Deir al-Balah. The attack occurred while families were waiting for vital humanitarian aid, marking the second such incident in less than a week.

On July 10, another Israeli strike killed 15 Palestinians, including nine children and four women, as they queued for food supplies distributed by Project Hope, a UNICEF partner. At least 30 others were injured, 19 of them children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

Among the victims was Mohammed, a one-year-old boy whose mother, Donia, was critically wounded and found clutching his tiny shoe. Another survivor, Reema, age 10, witnessed the deaths of multiple children during a separate attack on a nutrition center in the same city.

Russell called the incidents a “cruel reality” for Gaza’s families, emphasizing that no parent should have to face such tragedy. She urged Israel to review its rules of engagement and conduct a thorough, independent investigation, citing violations of international humanitarian law.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached catastrophic levels. UNICEF reports that over 5,800 children were diagnosed with malnutrition in June alone, including more than 1,000 with severe acute malnutrition—a figure that has risen for four consecutive months.

The agency warns that 71,000 children and 17,000 mothers will require urgent treatment for acute malnutrition in the coming months. UNICEF’s stocks for preventing malnutrition have run out, and supplies for therapeutic treatment are critically low.

Fuel shortages have further crippled aid delivery, with hospitals, water systems, and bakeries on the brink of collapse. UN agencies warn that without consistent fuel access, lifesaving operations will cease, exposing 2.1 million people to deadly disease outbreaks and starvation.

UNICEF and WFP have called for an immediate ceasefire, the unimpeded entry of humanitarian aid, and the protection of civilians, especially children. “Hunger and acute malnutrition are a daily reality for children across the Gaza Strip,” Russell stated. “We have repeatedly warned of this trajectory and call again on all parties to prevent a catastrophe”.

The US government has opened a formal trade investigation against Brazil at the request of US leader Trump. The measure, announced on Tuesday, is based on Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 and could result in new tariffs or sanctions. According to the Office of the US Trade Representative, Brazil has allegedly promoted attacks against American social media companies and adopted “unfair” commercial practices. However, the official document released does not provide concrete proof of these accusations.

The initiative was articulated in the same letter in which Trump announced the 50% tariff on Brazilian products. Ambassador Jamieson Greer, who heads the USTR, says that the US has been documenting difficulties for American exporters in the Brazilian market for decades.

What are the accusations, without proof, against Brazil?

  • Digital commerce and payment services (PIX): The US' authorities want to put an end to the use of these mechanisms, alleging unfair practices (probably because thanks to this system a large part of the Brazilian population has stopped using Visa and Mastercard).
  • Anti-corruption measures: The US claims that Brazil fails to apply effective anti-corruption measures and does not comply with international standards on the subject.
  • Unfair and preferential tariffs: Accusation that Brazil favors certain partners with reduced tariffs, harming US competitiveness.
  • Ethanol: Brazil is said to have backed down on previous commitments and is now imposing higher tariffs on US ethanol.
  • Illegal deforestation: Accusation that Brazil is not effectively combating illegal deforestation, harming American competitors in the agricultural and timber sectors.
  • Intellectual property: The country would be ineffective in protecting and enforcing copyright, harming American creative and innovation workers. (Piracy for own consumption is not illegal in Brazil, and a popular shopping street like 25 de Março simply ignore enforcement).

IMF proposes tax hike in El Salvador - Prensa Latina

Article

San Salvador, Jul 16 (Prensa Latina) The International Monetary Fund (IMF) proposed to the government of El Salvador a tax increase in some items if it does not meet the collection goals agreed within the loan of 1,400 million dollars.

Local media such as the newspaper El Mundo reported today that the lending agency recommends a higher tax rate on cigarettes and alcoholic beverages, as well as vehicle registration and VAT on digital services.

These actions were agreed upon in lengthy negotiations that state that if the country does not collect enough money in the midst of a fiscal adjustment to correct distortions in the public accounts, there will be penalties, especially affecting social sectors.

El Mundo pointed out in its approach to the subject that in the final report of the first review of the Extended Service Program (ESF), published on Tuesday, the IMF highlighted that the fulfillment of the fiscal goals in the 2025 fiscal year is essential, but, if tax revenues are not enough, it offered a battery of tax proposals.

The range of proposals includes the introduction of a tourist entrance fee for non-residents of 20 dollars, as well as increasing the excise tax levied on cigarettes and alcoholic beverages.

In the face of a government that experts label as a spendthrift, the program with the IMF contemplates a fiscal adjustment of 3.5 points of the gross domestic product (GDP) during three years, starting in 2025 through measures such as elimination of wage fat and reduction of current spending, according to the online publication.

“The authorities agreed to continue to exercise tight control over public spending to meet primary balance targets for the remainder of the year to safeguard credibility, rebuild fiscal and external buffers, and put public debt on a steadily declining path,” the IMF said in the report.
