I've edited the title because the original is clickbait, and in the spirit of this community I'd like to avoid all forms of engagement farming.

  • Plants and Evolutionary Arms Race: Plants and animals are in an evolutionary arms race, with plants becoming more poisonous to deter animals from eating them, while animals adapt to specific plant poisons.
  • Natural Carcinogens in Plants: Over 20 years ago, it was known that many plants contain numerous natural carcinogens, with some vegetables like Brussels sprouts, mushrooms, spinach, and kale containing over 100 known human carcinogens.
  • Natural vs. Industrial Pesticides: A study found that naturally occurring pesticides in plants are far more abundant and more likely to cause cancer than industrial pesticides.
  • Lectins and Their Harm: Lectins, carbohydrate-based proteins found in most plants, can cause significant harm by binding to insulin receptors, leading to weight gain, leptin resistance, and other health issues.
  • Gluten and Leaky Gut: Gluten can cause leaky gut, allowing harmful substances like lectins to enter the body and cause inflammation and other health problems.
  • Molecular Mimicry and Autoimmunity: Lectins can trigger molecular mimicry, leading to autoimmune diseases where the body attacks its own tissues.
  • Nightshades and Toxins: Nightshade plants like potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplants produce solanine, a deadly poison. Improper storage or preparation can lead to poisoning.
  • Cyanogenic Foods: Some plants, like cassava and almonds, contain cyanide, which can be deadly if not properly prepared or consumed in large quantities.
  • Photosensitizers: Certain plants can make the skin more sensitive to light, leading to severe burns and other health issues.
  • Nutrient Blockers: Plants contain compounds that can block the absorption of nutrients, making plant-based proteins and other nutrients less bioavailable than those from animal sources.
  • Benefits of a Carnivore Diet: Dr. Chaffee and others have experienced significant health improvements, including weight loss, reduced inflammation, and reversal of autoimmune diseases, by adopting a carnivore diet and eliminating plants.
  • Importance of Trying a Carnivore Diet: Dr. Chaffee encourages everyone to try a strict carnivore diet for at least a month to experience the benefits and decide if it's the right way of eating for them.

Wow, this is all bullshit.

Would you care to elaborate? I'd like gently remind you to take heed of the rules in this community.

-Chaffee is clearly biased. -"X food contains Y, which is a poison!!!" Yah, sure, if you eat a preposterous amount of it. For example, the average human would need to eat something like 50 ounces of almonds in one day to be poisoned. That's three pounds of almonds. -The second point repeated multiple times. -Crying about potatoes being a nightshade when humans have spent the last several thousand years engineering out any potential for it to poison us lol -Nutrient blockers: wash your beans and it's a non-issue jfc

This is all crap that I can debunk off the top of my head. Go eat some vegetables.

Thank you for elaborating.

-Chaffee is clearly biased.

So am I. I think it's lazy to not have an opinion on important topics such as my own health.

Yes, the dose makes the poison. I see that you do agree that almonds contain some poison in the form of Cyanide. Knowing that I would not give children almonds, and I won't eat them, even ignoring other things such as averages being misleading or the water usage of farming almonds. In the same way, I won't eat pufferfish although pufferfish can be raised in a way to not be poisonous. Why risk unnecessary poison?

-The second point repeated multiple times.

Not all poisons are the same. The details are relevant to the discussion.

-Crying about potatoes being a nightshade when humans have spent the last several thousand years engineering out any potential for it to poison us lol

I grew up being told over and over to cut those parts out of potatoes. It's news to me, but again, why risk it? Potatoes can be poisonous, and we don't have to eat them.

-Nutrient blockers: wash your beans and it's a non-issue jfc

If only it were that simple.

Go eat some vegetables.

No thank you. Since I don't have to, on the balance of probabilities I'd really rather not. The other points raised in the video such as lectins, the effects of gluten, protease inhibitors, photosensitizers, and nutrient bioavailability are salient as well.

Since they got banned for poor behavior, I'm going to try to steel man their position:

I won’t eat pufferfish although pufferfish can be raised in a way to not be poisonous. Why risk unnecessary poison?

  • More abundant food
  • Taste preferences
  • Many people can tolerate the low dose poison for a long time

That is as far as I could go. The rest was just rhetorical naysaying.

Even as the biased chaffee says - Eating plants is better then starving, the conversation isn't if we can survive with plants, the question is are they optimal in the long term.

[–] xep@fedia.io 2 points 3 days ago

Preferences are fair enough! There's no accounting for taste.

I also think social norms are also important to consider. Pufferfish is a delicacy here, and I won't turn it down if it's offered at a social event. It's just not polite. Likewise, I won't refuse a cup of alcohol, since here it signals a lack of willingness to be open and friendly. We don't live in isolation.

Dr. Chaffee is very well spoken and presents his position elegantly. He is the reason I tried carnivore
