I live in an old house and I was getting a mini-split for AC installed. I wanted to do ceiling cassettes, and the contractor told me it should be fine.

However, once they got up there and measured, it turns out that the 2x4s in my 115 year-old house are actually 2"x4", and so the cassette wouldn't fit unless they cut into the joists. We went with a different solution. But yeah just another example of enshittification, imo.

Maybe I’m being unreasonable but you shouldn’t be able to call something a 2x4 if your only justification for doing so is tricking and confusing people.

the internet says it's because it's 2x4 before it's dried and shit but like... okay, why not make it so that it's 2x4 after it's fucking dried?

imagine if someone sold you 100 pounds of wool then handed you like 20 and said he was counting the weight of the sheep.

imagine how long that bit of capital about the twenty yards of cloth would have been

First time I ever actually measured a 2x4:

"WTF is this this shit?!"

and presumably in metricland there's no distinction between nominal and actual since they just call them by their real sizes, correct? fuck america

You mean to tell me the country that stubbornly holds onto an archaic measurement system continues to use archaic measurements?
