“How do you turn your electricity off during an emergency?”

Gestures to the prayer sticks

[–] Fizz@lemmy.nz 49 points 10 months ago (1 children)
[–] marble@sh.itjust.works 41 points 10 months ago (1 children)

The electricity is still on how much of an emergency is it really?

[–] bobo@lemmy.ml 24 points 10 months ago (1 children)

The question is whether the lightning is staying in the wires or not

[–] _stranger_@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago

lightning can have a little freedom, as a treat.

[–] theUwUhugger@lemmy.world 17 points 10 months ago (1 children)

The prayer of discontinuation does start… with a prayer?

May the Omnissiah put copper wiring on your journey of knowledge

I really want an AdMech robe for troubleshooting gigs

"The electric things in my house currently don't and I would like them to not that?"

[–] blindbunny@lemmy.ml 41 points 10 months ago (4 children)

Really any trade. I don't want to find the main shutoff to your house but if you want to get the water out sometimes we need to dig random holes in your front yard to find it.

[–] Canonical_Warlock@lemmy.dbzer0.com 26 points 10 months ago

Same in HVAC-R. I had a customer complain to me the other day about "having to teach one of my coworkers how to do their job" because that coworker asked where the condensing unit for their walk in cooler was located. Like my coworker should have just immediately known the exact layout of that site.

But thats fine, the customer is paying $280 per hour so if they'd rather I spend the time galavanting around their site finding where things are on my own then that's on them. It's actually nice they told me that they were an asshole up front so I knew not to worry about saving them any money.

We're actually putting individual shutoffs on the lines into every plumbed room as we reno No, not cocks, actual hard shutoffs on the lines (raised house, copper goes through a 2m tall subfloor)

If the brewery taps spring a leak i'm damned well still gonna be able to flush the shitter.

[–] blindbunny@lemmy.ml 2 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

That's a wild amount of extra work.

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

yah, but think of the joyyyyy.

I wanna swap out a tap? Fix a cock? I don't have to schlep down the stairs, out the front, shut off the mains, do the work, have someone schlep out there again to turn it on while I watch for leaks.... (our house was built in the 60's. We have a lot of...interesting choices we are resolving) or be unable to do anything until an issue is resolved

Lesson was learned hard after the Galvanised Pipe incident. Covered in mud, unable fix until stores opened Monday morning, unable to shower. Angry AF about it

[–] blindbunny@lemmy.ml 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Oh I kinda assumed it would be outside. Now I'm imagining a plumbing breaker box 🤔😁

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 3 points 10 months ago

pretty much. But not centralised, just in...places that make sense

[–] kreekybonez@sh.itjust.works 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

metal detectors work wonders for finding gates! that, and a long poking-stick to make sure it's the right thing before pulling up the sod

[–] thesystemisdown@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

My cleanouts are PVC. All you get is the stick. I've learned that as soon as they're located, put a couple bricks and a lawn ornament on top.

Edit: misread... you can definitely find the shutoff with a metal detector. Mine will twist your ankle though, no mystery where it is.

[–] Cenzorrll@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

I don't have a water shutoff on my property, it's at the alley so I'm supposed to call the utility to shut it off if I have to do anything. I can turn the hot water off before it goes into the heater, but that's it.

On an unrelated note, I've fixed all the hot water sides of my sinks, tubs, etc.

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 37 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (2 children)

See this is funny because, as an electrician, everyone who calls me can't seem to shut up long enough to let me actually answer questions

Gimme a damn second to process what you just explained, think, and then translate into Normie Layman. Im fast but it still takes a moment, please lol

[–] Venus_Ziegenfalle@feddit.org 19 points 10 months ago

comes up from behind, neck tickled by their breath "Found the culprit yet?"

[–] stinky@redlemmy.com 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

You have such a great attitude!

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

😂

I really do try!

[–] CannedYeet@lemmy.world 10 points 10 months ago

Just say "Wouldn't you like to know" and walk away

[–] hakunawazo@lemmy.world 8 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)
[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I mean, both of them accomplish the goal... it's just that one route offers a bonus surprise along the way! 😜

[–] myotheraccount@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)
[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 3 points 10 months ago

In that case, both routes offer neat surprises:-P

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 6 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Which one. You want the isolator switch or the actual mains board?

The latter is the one with the sticker of an electron stabbing a kid "Electricity kills!"

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago (1 children)

My latter just says be careful not to fall?

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 3 points 10 months ago

how freakin' high up is your circuit box??

[–] stinky@redlemmy.com 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)
[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

It's an important question. The solar isolation is on the inverter. The HVAC isolation is on the south side of the house. The mains board is on the north side of the house.

I've got an incredibly hard to access circuit breaker behind the fridge. That's the best I can give you.
