When deciding which field to click, you should also consider what you gain, i.e. the information gain.

That's true. I've heard here that edges (especially corners) are better in this regard. So in this example the top cell seems like the definite best choice.

EDIT: One thing I didn't mention in my post is that the cells away from the solved region have an even better safety probability of 80.1%. So the best move might well be to simply start fresh in a new corner.

A year or two ago I decided to find some ad-free versions of Solitaire and Minesweeper for Windows after the official Windows versions he was playing showed him some virus scam ads that made him think he was being hacked (super scummy of Microsoft to put ads in those games to begin with). That sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole as I discovered the world of competitive Minesweeper and various clones that fix problems with Microsoft’s original versions and offer better features for competition. I’d never before considered how complex it could be!
