Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

The US military has issued new media restrictions demanding that journalists pledge not to gather any information – including unclassified documents – that has not been authorized for release or else risk revocation of their press passes.

In a memo issued Thursday, the Pentagon stated that “it remains committed to transparency to promote accountability and public trust”. However, using an abbreviation for the recently rebranded Department of War headed by the Trump administration’s Pete Hegseth, the memo added: “DoW information must be approved for public release by an appropriate authorizing official before it is released, even if it is unclassified.”

It went on to say: “Only authorized persons who have received favorable determinations of eligibility for access, signed approved non-disclosure agreements, and have a need-to-know may be granted access to [classified national security information].”

Journalists reporting from the Pentagon are now required to sign a pledge agreeing to restrict their movements within the building and not to access any unauthorized materials. If they refuse to sign the pledge, their Pentagon press passes will be revoked.

In a post on X, Hegseth said Friday: “The ‘press’ does not run the Pentagon – the people do. The press is no longer allowed to roam the halls of a secure facility. Wear a badge and follow the rules – or go home.”

I remember when this would be the biggest news for weeks and end any other presidency, especially a Democratic president. Now, this will probably be the last I hear of it.

[–] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 55 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Journalists have been asked to sign a pledge to not report on reality.

[–] partial_accumen@lemmy.world 36 points 5 months ago

Only authorized by the Pentagon will we learn "Oceania had always been at war with Eurasia".

[–] scaredoftrumpwinning@lemmy.world 14 points 5 months ago

Damn right because the Pentagon won't let you hear it again. Nor anything about the Epstein list. I'm sure fox news won't have to go through this horse shit so we can all watch breaking news there and get dummer together.

[–] brachiosaurus@mander.xyz 1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Name a time this ended a presidency. They always got away with it.

[–] lennybird@lemmy.world 5 points 5 months ago

I mean, Watergate.

But that's the point. Shit this obviously bad and fucked up was at least done in the shadows in the past. This is out in the open and it's just some weekend news.

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 54 points 5 months ago (1 children)

The ‘press’ does not run the Pentagon – the people do.

So if you revoke their press passes... they're no longer the press... and they're just the people...

And if you don't allow any regulations or public oversight then even the volk don't run it, so who does?

[–] infectoid@lemmy.world 38 points 5 months ago

Ah. Just don’t listen to them. Collect whatever you deem fit for reporting on.

Don’t preemptively cede ground to fascists. They wouldn’t do it for you.

Not enough normies are testing the boundaries the same way the fascists are.

[–] ItemWrongStory@midwest.social 34 points 5 months ago (4 children)

This is extremely dangerous to our democracy.

[–] SeeMarkFly@lemmy.ml 19 points 5 months ago

We are past the danger, democracy is DONE.

A grueling mess awaits us.

Let's not jump to any conclusions. Maybe they're just cutting red tape, and plan to keep sending sensitive information to journalists via signal.

[–] Adverse_Reaction@anarchist.nexus 7 points 5 months ago

For those who don't recognize the reference: This is extremely dangerous to our democracy.

[–] brachiosaurus@mander.xyz -1 points 5 months ago

Spinning the media is how "democracy" has been working since day 1. It's quite simple: people only vote parties they know the existence of and the media only talk about a few of them.

[–] floopus@lemmy.ml 29 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Whistleblowers should start posting the documents to porn hub for the piss of it

[–] MajorasTerribleFate@lemmy.zip 10 points 5 months ago

Aim for those categories on the site known to be more visited by red states. Excepting, say, Trans, because trans folks don't need additional reasons to be targeted.

On the one hand, what the fuck is this bullshit?

On the other hand, everything they officially release is usually a lie anyway. Maybe just have a trusted source without a pass publish your "unmentionables?"

They tweet their fucking war crimes in emojis, and the most interesting information to come out of the DoW has been leaks about also hooking their own employees up to polygraphs.

There has been very little "RELEASE THE EPSTEIN FILES" headlines lately. Goddam that trump is good at misdirection or (and even scarier) the media companies are complicit.

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 13 points 5 months ago

The dismantling of democracy is the main event

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 8 points 5 months ago

trump is good at misdirection

8 year olds are too

Let's not be governed by 8 year olds

[–] renrenPDX@lemmy.world 24 points 5 months ago

Last week: freedom of speech gone. This week: freedom of the press gone.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 20 points 5 months ago

The ‘press’ does not run the Pentagon – ~~the people do~~ a fascist drunk who most of the people despise does

There, fixed it for him.

[–] krunklom@lemmy.zip 19 points 5 months ago (2 children)

What the actual fuck, America?

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 8 points 5 months ago

They did warn them, though.

[–] RustyShackleford@lemmy.zip 16 points 5 months ago (1 children)

This feels a lot like the Russian tactics they used in the Cold War before the USSR fell.

[–] AcidiclyBasicGlitch@sh.itjust.works 13 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

Nyet, that's crazy talk.

BTW, Paul Weyrich, the guy that created the Heritage Foundation also helped sneak computers and other electronics into the Soviet Union and held mock elections to teach Soviet politicians about democracy in 1989.

In 1991 several members of Heritage formed the first of its kind go between for U.S. and Russia businesses to help them make the transition to capitalism.

But we just don't talk about that apparently.

Somebody made a documentary about some of it in 2012 that aired once on PBS and then never again.

And then Weyrich gave a talk at a Christian college in 1996, and while taking questions from the audience he casually mentioned that as far as he knew, Gorbachev's right hand man wanted to crack down on him while he was holding mock elections. He claims when Gorbachev responded in silence the right hand man left his office and allegedly began planning the coup the next day unbeknownst to anyone from the U.S.

And now here we are almost 40 years later, and shit seems to be coincidentally unfolding basically the exact same way as we continue to watch the Trump administration execute the publicly available playbook provided by Heritage.

Saving this comment for later so my wife and I can rage together.

[–] thefluffiest@feddit.nl 12 points 5 months ago (1 children)

So the Department of War is now also the Department of Propaganda

[–] raptore39@lemmy.ca 5 points 5 months ago

Always has been

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 4 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Why is no one talking about this "Dept of war" bullshit?

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 13 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Because ultimately the name doesn't really matter, it's just another ego flex like renaming the Gulf of Mexico. Whether they're the DoD or the DoW, they're doing the same bullshit.

Also, DoW is the original name for that department, anyway. And honestly, it's more fitting given their history.

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 1 points 5 months ago

Although since it was renamed in 1949, we didn't fight any wars on the scale of WWI or WWII. Perhaps the name contributed to that?

[–] ratten@lemmings.world 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I'd rather it be called department of war because it's more accurate of what it's for.

"Defense" has always been bullshit to placate the pearl-clutching disneyvision morons that plague our society.

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Exactly. As a non-US I actually find it way more honest than this DoD euphenism.

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 1 points 5 months ago

I hear you guys. It's just odd to me that it slipped right past everything else going on.

[–] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 3 points 5 months ago

"Of course the independent press is free... To report what we allow them to."
