it's pretty useful. you can do it by nations or sub-divisions within nations. great for alt-history

paid features aren't needed they are just extra frills.

QGis also exists if you want to add custom polygons and such, it's also totally free and can injest just about any geographic data you can throw at it thanks to the hard work of the GDAL team

ooo i will check that out.

(seems very powerful and comprehensive, the kind of thing you can use for RPGs and heavy worldbuilding, but will need time to learn)

I use ArcGIS pro for work. It's incredibly powerful for any map related stuff. A personal license is like $100/year if the QGIS interface is to "open source" for you. I'd also be happy to walk you through the basics if you want lol.

Especially the how to rip literally any map data from anywhere and use it.

Here's a good example of what you can do with actual cartography software

i'm a nerd for GIS at least being able to navigate it and constantly logging in to see all the little changes happening in my locality. people think i'm a wizard but i'm like "it's just a map".

i would love to learn but i am so swamped with so many little adhd projects. if you are a surveyor though that's really cool seems like the kind of job that would have satisfied the tylenol parts of my brain

I'm a designer lol, we use GIS and a ton of automation I've built to design fiber networks
